LOGAN, Utah - Utah State gymnast Sarah Landes was named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Jan. 29, an award that is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
A freshman from Edmond, Okla., (Deer Creek HS/Dynamo Gymnastics) Landes was named the Gymnast of the Meet as she helped Utah State to a season-high team score of 194.050 and a second-place finish in a tri-meet with No. 13 Boise State and Southern Utah last weekend. It was the Aggies' first win over Boise State since the 2007 Western Athletic Conference Championships, snapping a 13-meet losing skid to BSU.
Landes, who set personal bests on the beam, floor and all-around, won the all-around with a 39.225 while sharing the beam title with a 9.875 and finishing third on floor with a 9.825. Landes' winning beam score of 9.875 is tied for the fifth-best score in school history, while her 39.225 all-around score was just outside of USU's top 20 individual all-around performances. She also tied her career-high on vault with a 9.725 (12th) while her third-place bars score of 9.800 is .025 off her top score.
This is the first USU weekly honor for Landes this season as well as the first for a USU gymnast.
Landes and the Aggies will continue their four-meet homestand by hosting Arizona State on Friday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. (MT) at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
