FIRST IN EIGHT - Friday is the first meeting between USU and ASU since 2004 when the teams met in a quad meet hosted by California at Berkley, Calif... The Aggies were third in that meet while the Sun Devils were second.

RARE SUN DEVIL VISIT - Friday's meet is Arizona State's first visit to Logan since 2002, when the Sun Devils were at the Spectrum for a tri-meet with USU and Southern Utah... ASU won while USU was second... Arizona State is second Pac-12 team to visit the Spectrum in as many years as well as the second Grand Canyon State team as Arizona was in Logan last year for a tri-meet with USU and BYU.

IN THE RANKINGS - Arizona State is ranked No. 26 in this week's Troester/GymInfo Women's Gymnastics Coaches Rankings while USU is up to No. 38 after being ranked 40th last week.

ABOUT UTAH STATE - In their last action in a tri-meet with Boise State and Southern Utah, USU scored season high scores on three of the four events, opening with a 48.575 on vault, then a 48.850 on bars to lead at the meet's midway point... The Aggies scored another season-high on beam with a 48.550 and finished with a 48.075 on floor, the second-highest score this season, finishing second after leading at the meet's midway point... USU did collect its first win over Boise State since the 2007 WAC Championships, snapping a 13-meet losing skein... Last season, it took until the second-to-last meet of the season for the Aggies to score over a 194.

Freshman Sarah Landes was the gymnast of the meet, setting personal bests on beam, floor and her all-around competition with a total score of 39.225, making her mark in the USU record books in the process... Landes was the gymnast of the meet, setting personal bests on beam, floor and her all-around competition with a total score of 39.225... Landes won the all-around while sharing the beam title with BSU's Amy Glass, both posting 9.875's, while finishing third on floor with a 9.825... Landes' winning beam score of 9.875 is tied for the fifth-best score in school history, while her 39.225 all-around score was just outside of USU's top 20 individual all-around performances.

Utah State has a team-average of 192.767, posting a WAC-best average on bars at 48.725 while averaging 48.242 on vault, 47.583 on beam and 48.217 on floor.

Landes is second in the WAC on both bars and all-around, ranking fourth in the North Central region and 37th in the nation in the all-around with a 38.992 average... She is also tied for ninth in the region and tied for 76th in the country on bars with a 9.775 average... Landes also is tied for fifth in the WAC, tied for 11th in the region and tied for 76th in the nation on beam also with a 9.775 average.

Sophomore Paige Jones is second in the conference, tied for fifth in the region and tied for 34th in the country on vault with a 9.850 average... Jones also is sixth in the league, tied for 15th in the region and tied for 97th in the nation on floor with a 9.775 average... In the all-around, Jones is eighth in the WAC, 19th in the region and 100th in the nation with a 38.325 average.

Junior Amelia Montoya and senior Rebecca Holliday join Landes and Jones in the national top 100 rankings, as both are nationally ranked on bars with Montoya tied for 88th (9.767) while Holliday is tied for 90th (9.763).{See pg 10 for complete rankings}

DOUBLE BAKER'S DOZEN - In the last two meets, USU gymnasts have tied or broken 13 career-highs, as in Friday's tri-meet vs. Southern Utah and Boise State, seven different gymnasts posted top scores... Landes posted four for the second-straight meet (all-around, beam, floor and tied vault), while junior Amelia Montoya (vault, tied bars), sophomore Paige Jones (vault, beam) and freshman Susie Miller (vault, beam) had two each... Senior Rebecca Holliday (floor), freshman Kaitlyn Betts (tied bars) and fellow freshman Ashley Follett (beam) all had one each... Two weeks ago in the quad meet at Texas Woman's, all five of USU's scoring vault scores were top career scores... Landes posted four career-best marks (vault, beam, floor and all-around), while three others notched two marks in Jones (vault and all-around), freshman Susie Miller (vault and floor) and Montoya (vault and bars), and three had one each in freshman Kaitlyn Betts (bars), freshman Ashley Follett (beam) and junior Amanda Watamaniuk (vault).

WAC-BEST BARS - Utah State leads the WAC with a 48.725 bars average... USU is fourth in the conference in team total (192.767), while ranking fifth in the league on vault (48.242), beam (47.583) and floor (48.217).

TECHNIQUE TWOSOME - Aggie freshman Susie Miller and Sun Devil freshman Natasha Sundby were teammates at Technique Gymnastics Club in California... Miller hails from Fair Oaks, Calif., while Sundby is a El Dorado Hills, Calif., native.

PARKETTES PAIR - USU sophomore Brittney Mackins and Arizona State freshman Morgan Steigerwalt are both alums of Parkettes Gymnastics Club in Pennsylvania, as Mackins is a Allentown, Pa., native while Steigerwalt is from Jim Thorpe, Pa... Mackins is out for the season with an injury.

ABOUT ARIZONA STATE - The Sun Devils are 3-0 overall and 2-0 in Pac-12 action after knocking off in-state foe, 15th-ranked Arizona, 195.875-194.350 in a dual Friday night... ASU scored a season-high and got career-highs from three gymnasts to earn its first win over UA since 2006.

Senior Beate Jones was ASU's lone event winner, collecting the all-around with a 39.200, while also finishing second on both floor (9.900) and vault (9.850).... Seniors Kahoku Palafox and Madison Snowden tied for second on beam with 9.825's each while Palafox and fellow senior Stephanie Hangartner were the top Sun Devils on bars tying for third with 9.800's apiece.

Jones leads ASU with a 38.933 all-around average, as well as leading the team on vault with a 9.825 average while sharing the team-leading honors on floor with freshman Natasha Sundby with 9.825 averages... Palafox has the top bars average on the team with a 9.833 while Snowden is tops on beam with a 9.750 average.

ASU head coach John Spini is in his 32nd season at the helm of the Sun Devils' program, earning 20 NCAA Championships berths, including having at least one ASU gymnast at the NCAA Championships in 25 out of 30 seasons... Spini has coached 27 All-Americans for a total of 81 All-American accolades... Six gymnasts have won individual NCAA titles under Spini.

SERIES HISTORY VS. ARIZONA STATE - Utah State has a combined 4-32 record against Arizona State, including 3-2 at home... Friday is the first meeting between USU and ASU since 2004 when the teams met in a quad meet hosted by California at Berkley, Calif... TOUGH TRODDING FOR WAC TEAMS - Two of the top scores in the NCAA have been in meets vs. WAC teams as Oklahoma's winning score of 197.450 in the Texas Woman's quad meet with Utah State was the second-highest at the time and is currently is the fourth-highest score this season in the country and, only topped by a 197.575 by UCLA the next day in a win over San Jose State, which is now the second-highest... Florida has the highest score with a 197.775.

AGGIES SCHEDULE FULL OF NUMBERS - A total of five of USU's opponents are in this week's Top 25, including two in the top five at Utah (Jan. 13) is No. 1 while Oklahoma (Jan. 21) is No. 5... Other USU foes include No. 15 Denver (March 24), No. 16 Boise State (Jan. 27/March 2) and No. 18 Arizona (March 16)... Two other opponents are just outside the Top 25 in No. 26 Arizona State (Saturday-Feb. 3) and No. 27 Southern Utah (Jan. 27/Feb. 24/March 9/March 24).

SUPER 16 - The 16 gymnasts on USU's 2012 roster is the most on an Aggie roster since 2006, after having 15 on the 2011 roster, 13 on the 2010 ledger, 12 on the 2009 roster... USU had 14 gymnasts on each of the 2008 and 2007 rosters, while having 16 on the 2006 roster.

BEEHIVE STATERS - Utah State has three gymnasts from the state of Utah in senior Haley Hogan (Centerville/Viewmont HS/North Davis Gymnastics), sophomore Christina Nye (North Logan/Logan HS/Tytans Gymnastics) and freshman Ashley Follett (American Fork, Utah/American Fork HS/All American Gymnastics).

FLIPPING THE BOOKS TOO - Utah State had four gymnasts earn academic all-WAC honors last season, and three return, in seniors Haley Hogan and Rebecca Holliday, along with junior Amanda Watamaniuk.

LAST TIME OUT - To kick off a four-meet homestand Friday, the Utah State gymnastics team finished in second place in a tri-meet between Southern Utah and No. 13 Boise State with a final score of 194.050. Freshman Sarah Landes was the gymnast of the meet, setting personal bests on beam, floor and her all-around competition with a total score of 39.225, making her mark in the USU record books in the process.

Last season, it took until the second-to-last meet of the season for the Aggies to score over a 194. Southern Utah finished with 194.525 to win the meet while Boise State took third with 193.525.

With the result, USU is now 2-4, as Friday night was the Aggies' first win over Boise State since the 2007 Western Athletic Conference Championships, snapping a 13-meet losing skid vs. the Broncos. Southern Utah and Boise State both evened their records at 2-2.

The Aggies scored season high scores on three of the four events, opening with a 48.575 on vault, then a 48.850 on bars to lead at the meet's midway point. USU scored another season-high on beam with a 48.550 and finished with a 48.075 on floor, the second-highest score this season. Southern Utah sealed the win with a 48.675 on vault in the fourth rotation after a 48.875 on floor. SUU also scored a 48.325 on bars and a 48.650 on beam. Boise State recorded a 47.825 on beam, a 49.075 on floor, a 49.150 on vault and a 47.475 on bars.

Landes was the gymnast of the meet, setting personal bests on beam, floor and her all-around competition with a total score of 39.225. Landes won the all-around while sharing the beam title with BSU's Amy Glass, both posting 9.875's, while finishing third on floor with a 9.825. Landes' winning beam score of 9.875 is tied for the fifth-best score in school history, while her 39.225 all-around score was just outside of USU's top 20 individual all-around performances.

Southern Utah's Michaela Chernoch was second in the all-around with a 39.050 while Glass was third with a 38.725.

Sophomore Paige Jones tied for second on vault with a career-high 9.875, which tied the fourth-best score in school history. BSU's Hailey Gasper tied Jones for second while fellow BSU gymnast Brittany Potvin-Green won the event with a 9.900. The Broncos took the top two spots on bars, as Ciera Perkins took top honors with a 9.875 followed by Kelsy Morris with a 9.825. Glass and Chernoch shared the floor title with 9.900's.

The Aggies opened the meet on vault with freshman Breyanna Aufiero getting it started with a 9.375. Junior Amanda Watamaniuk was next with a 9.575, followed by freshman Susie Miller and her 9.600, tying her career-high. Landes notched a 9.725 while junior Amelia Montoya beat her career-high with a 9.800. Jones also beat her personal record, landing a 9.875.

After the first rotation, the Aggies were in the lead with 48.575. SUU started on bars with a 48.325 and Boise was on beam with 47.825.

For the second event, Utah State moved to the bars, where senior Rebecca Holliday started things off with a 9.775. Montoya was next, tying her career-high with a 9.800. Watamaniuk notched a 9.750, followed by Landes and her 9.800. Jones took the only fall of the night, notching an 8.850. Freshman Kaitlyn Betts rounded out the rotation by tying her career-high with a 9.750.

The Aggies maintained their first place position after the second rotation, with a total score of 97.425. After their turn on beam, SUU was in second with 96.975. Boise State stayed in third with a total of 96.900.

Moving to beam, freshman Ashley Follett topped her career-high with a 9.675. Keeping with the theme, Miller was next, also beating her personal best with a score of 9.575. After a fall, Montoya notched a 9.100, followed by Holliday with a 9.775. Landes set a career-high with her 9.875 and Jones finished the event, shattering her career-high with a 9.650.

Boise State's run on the vault was enough to push them into first place after the third rotation with a total of 146.050. The Aggies fell to second with 145.975, while Southern Utah was in third with 145.850.

To conclude the meet, Utah State moved to the floor where Miller led off with a 9.650. Watamaniuk slipped on a pass, notching a 9.050. Landes set a new personal best, scoring 9.825. Montoya stepped out of bounds, putting her at 9.100. Jones followed her, landing a 9.750, while Holliday notched a 9.750.

Final standings left the Aggies just a hair behind first place as the Thunderbirds left with the win with 194.525. USU finished with 194.050, followed by the Broncos and their score of 193.525.

2011 REVIEW - Utah State finished with a No. 47 ranking in the Troester/GymInfo Women's Gymnastics Coaches Poll... USU had a final Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 192.935, a season-average of 192.483 and a season-high of 194.550... The Aggies were fourth in the WAC and eighth in the North Central final rankings... USU was also fourth in the WAC on two of the four apparatus: vault (48.400 RQS/48.173 avg./48.600 high), bars (48.555 RQS/48.308 avg./49.000 high), while ranking fifth on the other two events: beam (47.820 RQS/47.575 avg./48.625 high) and floor (48.625 RQS/48.427 avg./48.975 high).

Individually, Nicole Simoneau was fourth in the WAC, tied for 11th in the North Central region and tied for No. 55 in the country with a 9.835 RQS and a 9.765 average with a season-high of 9.875... Simoneau is also tied for 14th in the conference and 38th in the region on beam with a 9.710 RQS and a 9.584 average with a season-best of 9.750... Lyndsie Boone was tied for eighth in the WAC and tied for 24th in the region on vault with a 9.775 RQS and a 9.738 average with a high score on the season of 9.825... Jackie Dillon was tied for ninth in the WAC and tied for 21st in the region on floor with a 9.800 RQS and a 9.771 average, with a top season score of 9.850... Dillon was also sixth in the conference and 12th in the region as well as 76th in the nation in the all-around with a 38.720 RQS and 38.423 average with a season-high score of 38.150.

UTAH STATE'S RICHARDS NAMED NACGC CO-REGIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR - Utah State gymnastics head coach Jeff Richards was named the NCAA Division I National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC) North Central Region Co-Coach of the Year, in a vote by the region's head coaches at the NCAA Division I Gymnastics North Central Regional. Richards shares the award with Utah co-head coach Megan Marsden.

Richards led five Aggie individuals to the NCAA North Central Regional Championships last Saturday in Denver, Colo. Senior Jackie Dillon was eighth in the all-around with a score of 38.450 to lead the Aggies on the night. The eighth-place finish was the highest of the night for Utah State. Freshman Rachel Vaske was 12th in the all-around with a score of 38.025. Senior Lyndsie Boone capped off an amazing Utah State career, finishing 14th in the all-around with a score of 37.950.

Sarah Landes - Had smashing collegiate debut, notching a 38.825 in the all-around to finish third and also tied for fourth on the bars with a 9.825 and was the lone Aggie in the top five of any of the four events, also posting a 9.700 on beam (7th), a 9.675 on vault (7th) and 9.625 on floor (8th)... At the Texas Woman's quad meet, improved on her all-around score with a 38.925 to finish second, as well as bettering her vault score with a 9.725 (T9th), and improving with 9.750's on both beam (T7th) and floor (T10th), while posting a 9.700 on bars (T13th)... Named the Gymnast of the Meet in the Boise State and Southern Utah tri-meet, setting personal bests on beam, floor and her all-around competition with a winning score of 39.225, making her mark in the USU record books in the process as her winning beam score of 9.875 is tied for the fifth-best score in school history, while her 39.225 all-around score was just outside of USU's top 20 individual all-around performances... Also scored career-highs of 9.825 on floor (3rd), 9.725 on vault (12th) while also posting 9.800 on bars (3rd), just .025 off top score.

CLUB/HIGH SCHOOL: Competed for Dynamo Gymnastics under Dennis and Shannon Harrison... At the 2011 Junior Olympic Nationals, she placed 10th on floor, 15th on vault, 12th on beam and 12th in all-around... Received the Shannon Miller Award in 2009... Graduated first in her class at Deer Creek High School.

Brittney Mackins - Will not be competing this season due to an injury.

LAST SEASON: In collegiate debut in the Southern Utah dual, competed on floor in an exhibition performance, posting a 9.450... Scored an 8.950 in a floor exhibition performance in the home finale vs. Cal State Fullerton... Did not compete in tri-meet at Southern Utah w/Iowa, nor at the WAC Championships... Susie Miller - In collegiate debut at Utah dual, scored a 9.650 on floor (7th), a 9.500 on beam (10th) and a 9.475 on vault (T9th)... Scored a 9.750 on floor (T10th), a 9.575 on vault (T17th) and an 8.825 on beam (23rd) in the quad meet at Texas Woman's... Improved on vault and beam scores in the tri-meet with Boise State and Southern Utah, posting 9.600 on vault (15th) and 9.575 on beam (13th) while also notching a 9.650 on floor (15th).

CLUB/HIGH SCHOOL: Competed at Technique Gymnastics under Lisa Poarch... Was a part of the 2011 Level 10 team that took third place at the NorCal State Championship meet... Was a 2010 National Invitational Tournament qualifier... Qualified for the 2008 Western meet... Was named Gymnast of the Year for her club in both 2009 and 2011.

Amelia Montoya - Was fifth in the all-around at the Utah dual with a 38.000, posting a career-high 9.700 on bars (10th), while also notching a 9.725 on floor (6th), a 9.475 on vault (T9th) and a 9.100 on beam (12th)... Posted a 38.300 in the all-around (6th) at the Texas Woman's quad, scoring a 9.800 on bars (T5th), a 9.750 on vault (8th), a 9.725 on floor (13th) and a 9.025 on beam (T19th)... Improved career-best score on vault while tying top score of career on bars in the Boise State/Southern Utah tri-meet, notching 9.800's on both vault (T4th) and bars (T3rd), while also scoring 9.100's on both beam (18th) and floor (16th) on the way to an all-around total of 37.800 (5th).

Amanda Watamaniuk - Posted new career-high on bars with a 9.775 (8th) at the Utah dual, and also scored a 9.475 on vault (T9th) and a 9.450 on floor (10th)... Notched a career-best 9.675 on vault (16th) at the Texas Woman's quad, as well as scoring a 9.600 on floor (19th) and a 9.150 on bars (22nd)...
