LOGAN, Utah -
Fresh off a tri-meet sweep at UC Davis last weekend and a dual-meet victory at Southern Utah this past Monday, Utah State is looking to carry that momentum into its meet against No. 15 Boise State on Friday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m., at Taco Bell Arena in Boise, Idaho.
The Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference (MRGC) dual meet will be streamed live at www.broncosports.com/videos, while fans can follow the live stats at http://www.broncosports.com/livestats/w-gym/20180216.htm. Furthermore, meet updates will be provided throughout the competition on Utah State's social media platforms.
"We had three wins and two good road scores in our last two meets, and are looking to build off that this weekend," said first-year USU head coach Amy Smith. "This team learned a lot over the last two competitions and I'm excited for them to apply it again Friday night in our second shot against the Broncos."
The Aggies (5-3, 1-1 MRGC) are in the midst of their most challenging part of the schedule as they are taking part in three meets in three different states - all on the road no less - in just a seven-day span. Utah State competed at UC Davis last Friday, at Southern Utah earlier this week and at Boise State on Friday.
"I'm excited that we get another opportunity to go against a conference opponent," said USU freshman Leighton Varnadore. "I expect us to go out there and put a full meet together with lots of energy like we do every day in practice."
Against Southern Utah on Monday night, Utah State had a gymnast place first on every event, including freshman Autumn DeHarde and junior Emily Briones tying for the top spot on beam with identical 9.875s. Junior Madison Ward was the floor champ with a 9.925 and she tied for first on bars with a 9.825. Freshman Mikaela Meyer led the way for Utah State on vault as she tied for first with a career-high-tying 9.825.
The Broncos come into Friday's meet after recording a 196.400 at a tri meet hosted by San José State on Feb. 9. Boise State defeated both Iowa State (195.275) and the host Spartans (194.500).
The Broncos had season-high team scores on vault (49.250), floor (49.375) and tied their season high on bars (49.225) to propel them to the sweep. Junior Shani Remme won the all-around title with a score of 39.425, just .025 shy of tying her career-high mark. En route to the all-around title she also won floor with a 9.925.
This is the second go-round between these two teams this year as Boise State posted a 196.625-195.100 victory over Utah State on Feb. 2 at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
"We are super happy to compete against Boise State once again," said USU sophomore MaKayla Bullitt. "We are excited to have another opportunity against them and continue to improve on our scores. I expect us to go out there and do what we do in the gym every day, as well as being confident in what we do and keeping our energy up."
Utah State enters Friday's meet ranked 38th in the nation on vault (48.738), 51st on bars (48.338), 24th on beam (48.796) and 27th on floor (48.938).
Individually, junior Emily Briones and freshman Autumn DeHarde are both tied for 64th nationally on beam (9.821), while DeHarde also ranks 87th on floor (9.825). Junior Madison Ward ranks 82nd on vault (9.813) and freshman Faith Leary is tied for 99th on floor (9.821).
Boise State (8-0, 3-0 MRGC) ranks 10th nationally on vault (49.060), 12th on bars (49.010), 18th on beam (48.915) and 14th on floor (49.130).
Individually, Remme is tied for 11th in the nation in the all-around (39.400), including ranking 10th on beam (9.885) and tied for 19th on bars (9.865) and tied for 27th on floor (9.875). Remme has garnered all five MRGC Conference Gymnast of the Week honors this season.
Utah State sophomore McKinley Pavicic spent the 2016-17 campaign at Boise State, but did not record any stats. She has yet to compete for the Aggies this season as she continues to recover from an injury.
Utah State is 55-44 all-time against Boise State, including 27-13 at home, 17-16 on the road and 11-15 at a neutral site. The Broncos have won 17 straight in the series and 30 of the last 31 meetings. USU's last victory against BSU came on Jan. 27, 2012, a 194.050-193.525 triumph at the Spectrum.
