ON THE ROAD AGAIN - Cue the Willie Nelson music as USU is on the road again for the first time in nearly a month as the Aggies have enjoyed the perils of home for the last four meets... USU's last road trip was on Jan. 21 when the Aggies competed at a quad meet in Denton, Texas hosted by Texas Woman's.

FAMILIAR FOES - Saturday marks the second time this season that Utah State will be facing Southern Utah, as the Aggies and T-Birds met in another tri-meet in USU's home-opener with Boise State on Jan. 27... USU and SUU will also meet at Cedar City in a dual on Friday, March 9... This is the first of two meetings between Utah State and BYU, as the Cougars venture to Logan on Monday, March 5 for a dual.

PUPIL VS. TEACHER - It's not quite as famous as noteworthy pupil vs. teacher match-ups like Luke Skywalker vs. Yoda, Henry David Thoreau vs. Ralph Waldo Emerson, Corey vs. Mr. Feeny, Neil Perry vs. John Keating, or even Bob Knight-Mike Krzyzewski, but Saturday's meet features fourth-year USU head coach Jeff Richards facing his former boss, as he was an assistant under SUU head coach Scott Bauman from 1991-98.

RIGHT OFF THE OL' CORN COB - Both USU and SUU head coaches began their coaching careers as student assistants for Utah State legendary head coach Ray Corn, with Richards coaching from 1988-90 while Bauman was with the Aggies through his 1990 graduation.

ALMA MATER SWAP - Saturday's meet also features a match-up between two head coaches leading the opposite's alma mater, as USU's Richards is a 1995 Southern Utah graduate while SUU's Bauman is a 1990 graduate of Utah State.

IN THE RANKINGS - All three of the teams involved in Saturday's meet are within four spots in this week's Troester/GymInfo Women's Gymnastics Coaches Rankings, as BYU is No. 36, one spot ahead of USU at No. 37 while Southern Utah is No. 40.

ABOUT UTAH STATE - Boosted by three event titles in addition to the all-around win, Utah State gymnastics earned its first dual victory and first WAC win of the season with a 193.875-193.400 win over Sacramento State Friday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

The Aggies collected three individual event titles Friday night as senior Rebecca Holliday won the beam with a 9.825 for her third-straight event win, while freshman Kaitlyn Betts collected the first win of her Aggie career with a 9.825 to nab top honors on bars... Fellow freshman Sarah Landes shared the floor crown with Sacramento State's Kailey Hansen with 9.850's each and also won the all-around with a 39.050 for her fourth all-around score in a row of 39.000 or higher.

USU's final score of 193.875 was its third-highest this season, as the Aggies notched a 48.125 on vault, 48.925 on bars, 48.000 on beam and 48.825 on floor... The 48.825 on floor was a season-high while the 48.925 on bars was USU's second-best bars score this season after last week's season-high 49.350, and the 48.000 on beam was the third-highest of the year.

Utah State has a team-average of 193.271, including a WAC-best 48.796 bars average, as well as posting averages of 48.379 on floor, 48.196 on vault and 47.900 on beam.

Freshman Sarah Landes is second in the WAC in the all-around, ranking third in the North Central region and 38th in the country with a 39.063 average... On beam, Landes is fourth in the conference, eighth in the region and tied for 60th in the country with a 9.783 average... Landes is also tied for 86th in the country on bars with an average of 9.785.

Sophomore Paige Jones is third in the WAC, ninth in the region and 93rd in the nation on vault with a 9.805 average... Jones also is fifth in the conference, 11th in the region and 78th in the nation on floor with a 9.795 average.

Senior Rebecca Holliday is second in the conference, 10th in the region and tied for 71st in the country on bars with an average of 9.790... Holliday is also 74th in the nation on beam with a 9.760 average.

Junior Amelia Montoya is tied for 86th in the nation on bars with a 9.788 average, ranking third in the WAC and 11th in the region. {See pg 11 for complete rankings}

CUE THE MUSIC - Utah State's top three bars performers' rankings in the conference match the intro countdown to a song: 2-3-4, as senior Rebecca Holliday is second with a 9.790 average, while junior Amelia Montoya is third with a 9.788 average and freshman Sarah Landes is fourth with an average of 9.775.

WAC-BEST BARS - Utah State leads the WAC on bars with a 48.796 average... That average ranks second in the North Central region behind Utah's 49.063 average... The Aggies' bar team ranks 14th in the country.

USU is third in the WAC in team total (193.271), while ranking fifth on vault (48.196), beam (47.900) and floor (48.379).

CAREER-HIGHS FOR 15 PLEASE ALEX - Utah State posted a season-high 15 career-highs on the way to its season-high 194.875 in the San Jose State dual on Feb. 10, including all six in the bars line-up... Freshman Sarah Landes led with five (all four events + all-around), followed by two by senior Rebecca Holliday (bars and beam), sophomore Paige Jones (bars and all-around) and junior Amanda Watamaniuk (bars and floor), as well as one each by junior Amelia Montoya (bars), along with freshmen Kaitlyn Betts (bars), Ashley Follett (beam) and Susie Miller (floor).

The 15 career-highs in the SJSU dual set the bar high, and the Aggies only had three career-bests in the dual against Sacramento State last Friday... USU had 13 each in the quad at Texas Woman's with Oklahoma and Centenary as well as at the tri-meet with Southern Utah and Boise State on Jan. 27.

AGGIES SCHEDULE FULL OF NUMBERS - A total of six of USU's opponents are in this week's Top 25... Two of those six are in the top five as Oklahoma (Jan. 21) is No. 3 while Utah (Jan. 13) is No. 5... Other USU foes include No. 14 Arizona (March 16), No. 16 Boise State (Jan. 27/March 2), No. 20 Denver (March 24) and No. 24 Arizona State (Feb. 3)... One other opponent is just outside the Top 25 in No. 28 San Jose State (Feb. 10/March 24).

ABOUT BYU - The Cougars are 1-5 overall... In its last competition, BYU posted its second-highest score of the season with a 194.525, but fell to No. 14 Arizona in Tucson, as the Wildcats scored a season-high 196.275.

Sophomore Raquel Willman is currently the only Cougar in all-around competition... She finished in third place at Arizona, scoring her third best score of the season with 38.975 and also led the team on bars in fifth (9.800)... Senior Natalie Eyre-Pickard was the top BYU gymnast on vault (9.850) while senior Krysten Koval was the top for the team on beam, taking second (9.850) as well as tying for fifth on floor (9.825).

On the season, the Cougars are averaging a team total of 193.345, including 48.700 on vault, 48.360 on bars, 47.970 on beam and 48.315 on floor.

Willman has a team-leading 38.785 all-around average... Sophomore Megan Bain leads BYU on vault (9.833), beam (9.825) and floor (9.775), while Eyre-Pickard tops the team with a 9.825 bars average.

McCartney has an all-around average of 38.767 and also leads the team on vault (9.767) and beam (9.792), while also posting averages of 9.613 on bars and 9.596 on floor... Meiller has the top bars average with a 9.760 while sophomore Katie Osaki leads the team on floor with a 9.713 average.

BYU head coach Brad Cattermole is in his 23rd season leading the Cougars' program... Since becoming the head coach, he has guided BYU to eight National Championship Tournament appearances and 18 NCAA Regionals berths, missing Regionals just once.

ABOUT SOUTHERN UTAH - The Thunderbirds bring a 2-7 overall and 1-2 WAC ledger into Saturday's tri-meet of Beehive State foes... In its last action, SUU had to count falls on bars, beam and floor en route to a fourth-place finish at the University of Nebraska Masters Classic on Feb. 11... The T-Birds, who were the only non-top 25 ranked team in the quad meet, finished behind the host and eighth-ranked Cornhuskers (196.550), No. 22 Michigan (195.825) and No. 20 Washington (194.150).

Junior Caitlin Kennedy finished with a 38.725 in her first collegiate appearance in the all-around, marking the third highest all-around total by a Thunderbird gymnast this year and placing eighth in the quad meet... Kennedy was also the top SUU gymnast on bars, placing 14th with a 9.725... Freshman Rochelle Bernier was the top T-Bird on vault with a 9.800 to tie for eighth, while senior Brooke Cersosimo led the team on beam with a 9.700 to tie for 12th and freshman Brittney Jensen was SUU's top floor performer with a 9.750, tying for 13th.

SUU has a team average of 193.117, including 48.567 on vault, 48.200 on bars, 47.938 on beam and 48.413 on floor.

Kennedy's 38.725 leads SUU in the all-around and bars with a 9.725 average, while junior Michaela Chernoch tops the T-Birds with a 9.756 vault average and 9.842 floor average... Junior Alyssa Click leads the team with a 9.844 beam average.

SUU head coach Scott Bauman is in his 21st season at the helm of the T-Birds, earning WAC Coach of the Year and North Central Region Coach of the Year honors in 2010... Bauman has led SUU to four consecutive NCAA Regional appearances and led the T-Birds to the 2010 WAC Championship trophy.

SERIES HISTORY VS. OPPONENTS VS. BYU - The Aggies are 39-64-1 overall against the Cougars, including 6-27-1 at Provo... BYU has a five-meet win streak over USU as the Cougars won both meetings last season as well as all three match-ups in 2010 after the two teams split the two meetings in 2009... Saturday is the first of meeting between USU and BYU this season, as the Aggies and Cougars will square off in a dual on Monday, March 5 in USU's home finale.

VS. SOUTHERN UTAH - Utah State has a combined 36-35 record all-time vs. Southern Utah, including 5-12 in neutral locations... Saturday is the second of three regular-season meetings between USU and SUU, as the Aggies also met the T-Birds in a tri-meet with Boise State on Jan. 27 in USU's home-opener... SUU won that meet with a 194.525 while USU was second with a 194.050 and then No. 13 Boise State was third with a 193.525... Utah State will head to Cedar City for a dual at Southern Utah on March 9... SUU will also return to Logan on March 24 for the WAC Championships... The T-Birds have topped the Aggies in the last 16 meetings, taking all four regular-season meetings plus finishing higher at the WAC Championships... SUPER 16 - The 16 gymnasts on USU's 2012 roster is the most on an Aggie roster since 2006, after having 15 on the 2011 roster, 13 on the 2010 ledger, 12 on the 2009 roster... USU had 14 gymnasts on each of the 2008 and 2007 rosters, while having 16 on the 2006 roster.

BEEHIVE STATERS - Utah State has three gymnasts from the state of Utah in senior Haley Hogan (Centerville/Viewmont HS/North Davis Gymnastics), sophomore Christina Nye (North Logan/Logan HS/Tytans Gymnastics) and freshman Ashley Follett (American Fork, Utah/American Fork HS/All American Gymnastics).

FLIPPING THE BOOKS TOO - Utah State had four gymnasts earn academic all-WAC honors last season, and three return, in seniors Haley Hogan and Rebecca Holliday, along with junior Amanda Watamaniuk.

LAST TIME OUT - Boosted by three event titles in addition to the all-around win, Utah State gymnastics earned its first dual victory and first Western Athletic Conference win of the season with a 193.875-193.400 win over Sacramento State Friday night at a spirited Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

USU hosted Alumni Night Friday, honoring Utah State University alums, as well as Aggie gymnastics alums in a post-meet presentation of flowers to the five former gymnasts and one former assistant coach. Former gymnasts Lyndsie Boone (2008-11), Kathy Elliott (1973-76), Nicki Felley-Jackson (2006-09), Amanda Jenkins (2001), Devin Markle (2007-08) were honored, as well as former assistant coach Ben Nilson (2004-07).

Friday was also USU's final meet of its four-meet homestand, and the Aggies' second-to-last home meet of the season.

The Aggies collected three individual event titles Friday night as senior Rebecca Holliday won the beam with a 9.825 for her third-straight event win, while freshman Kaitlyn Betts collected the first win of her Aggie career with a 9.825 to nab top honors on bars. Sacramento State had a sliver-thin 145.075-145.050 lead after three rotations, but the Aggies overtook them with their 48.825 on floor while the Hornets had a 48.325 on beam. Sac State also had a 48.575 on vault, a 47.625 on bars, the aforementioned 48.325 on beam and 48.875 on floor for its final score of 193.400.

Emiko Ono won the vault with a 9.775, just ahead of teammate Hansen and USU sophomore Paige Jones, who tied for second with 9.750's each. Jones also tied for second on bars with Sac State's Nicole Meiller, both with 9.800's. Landes was second on beam with a 9.775. Junior Amelia Montoya notched a career-high on floor with a 9.825 to collect third. Montoya was facing her sister, Maddie, who is a sophomore for the Hornets and their parents and another sister were in the stands.

With the win, USU is 3-6 on the year and 1-2 in WAC action while Sac State fell to 4-6 overall and 0-3 in conference competition.

Utah State opened on vault with junior Amanda Watamaniuk leading off with a 9.050, followed by a 9.525 from Holliday. Landes notched a 9.700, preceding a 9.750 from Jones and then freshman Breyanna Aufiero stuck a career-high 9.575. That gave the Aggies a 48.125 on bars and they led after one rotation as the Hornets notched a 47.625 after a judge's inquiry score change.

Watamaniuk also started things off for Utah State on bars, registering a 9.775, mirrored by Montoya. Holliday posted a 9.50 before Jones recorded a 9.725 and then Landes posted a 9.800 and then freshman Kaitlyn Betts edged that with a 9.825.

At the meet's midway point, Utah State had a 97.050-96.200 lead after Sacramento State scored a 48.575 on vault.

Freshman Ashley Follet led off USU's beam rotation with a 9.05, followed by redshirt-freshman Samantha Wagner with a 9.600, her highest official score after posting a 9.750 in an exhibition performance last week. After a 9.625 by senior Haley Hogan, classmate Holliday posted a 9.825, then Landes notched a 9.775 before Miller posted a 9.175 to close out rotation. That gave USU a 48.000 on beam, its third-best mark on the event this season. Sac State scored a 48.875 on floor and took a sliver-thin 145.075-145.050 lead heading into the fourth and final rotation.

Just like their first two rotations, the Aggies were started by Watamaniuk on floor, posting a 9.725. Holliday followed with a 9.625, before a 9.100 by Miller. Montoya then notched a career-high 9.825. Landes then followed by tying her career-best with a 9.850. Jones then sealed USU's win with a 9.800, giving the Aggies their season-high 48.825 on floor and clinched their first WAC win and dual victory of the season.

At the Texas Woman's quad meet, improved on her all-around score with a 38.925 to finish second, as well as bettering her vault score with a 9.725 (T9th), and improving with 9.750's on both beam (T7th) and floor (T10th), while posting a 9.700 on bars (T13th)... Named the Gymnast of the Meet in the Boise State and Southern Utah tri-meet, setting personal bests on beam, floor and her all-around competition with a winning score of 39.225, making her mark in the USU record books in the process as her winning beam score of 9.875 is tied for the fifth-best score in school history, while her 39.225 all-around score was just outside of USU's top 20 individual all-around performances... Also scored career-highs of 9.825 on floor (3rd), 9.725 on vault (12th) while also posting 9.800 on bars (3rd), just .025 off top score... Registered a 39.000 in the all-around to finish as USU's top all-arounder and third overall in the dual vs. Arizona State, posting a 9.825 on floor (T3rd), as well as 9.725's on vault (T5th), bars (T7th) and beam (T5th)... Improved on career-high all-around score with 39.350 (2nd) in the San Jose State dual one of her five career-marks on the night, also sharing both bars and beam titles, both with 9.875's along with career-bests of 9.850 on floor (T2nd) and 9.750 on vault (T3rd)... Won the all-around and the floor titles in the dual vs. Sacramento State, posting 39.050 and 9.850, respectively, while also scoring 9.775 on beam (2nd), 9.725 on bars (7th) and 9.700 on vault (T4th).

At the 2011 Junior Olympic Nationals, she placed 10th on floor, 15th on vault, 12th on beam and 12th in all-around... Received the Shannon Miller Award in 2009...
