TANGLE WITH THE T-BIRDS ON TAP - For its third meet in seven days and its second-straight against an in-state foe, Utah State gymnastics (3-10, 1-2 WAC) will head to Cedar City, Utah for a dual at Southern Utah (3-9, 1-2) on Friday, March 9... BUSY SEVEN - USU is completing a stretch of three meets in seven days, as USU competed in a dual at Boise State last Friday, then hosted BYU in a dual on Monday night.

BEEHIVE STATE BATTLE TESTED - Friday is USU's second-straight meet and fifth of the season involving at least one in-state foe, and the Aggies are looking for their first win over a fellow Utah team... USU has faced then No. 5 Utah on Jan. 13 (L, 197.400-191.925), Southern Utah on Jan. 27 (2nd with 194.050 behind SUU's winning 194.525), as well as both SUU and BYU in a tri-meet at BYU on Feb. 25 (3rd behind BYU's 194.100 and SUU's 193.925) and BYU (L, 195.525-193.675)... USU will face SUU at least one more time, March 9 in a dual at SUU and March 24 in the WAC Championships at Logan.

PUPIL VS. TEACHER - It's not quite as famous as noteworthy pupil vs. teacher match-ups like Luke Skywalker vs. Yoda, Henry David Thoreau vs. Ralph Waldo Emerson, Corey vs. Mr. Feeny, Neil Perry vs. John Keating, or even Bob Knight-Mike Krzyzewski, but Friday's meet features fourth-year USU head coach Jeff Richards facing his former boss, as he was an assistant under SUU head coach Scott Bauman from 1991-98.

RIGHT OFF THE OL' CORN COB - Both head coaches began their coaching careers as student assistants for Utah State legendary head coach Ray Corn, with Richards coaching from 1988-90 while Bauman was with the Aggies through his 1990 graduation.

ALMA MATER SWAP - Friday's meet also features a match-up between two head coaches leading the opposite's alma mater, as USU's Richards is a 1995 Southern Utah graduate while SUU's Bauman is a 1990 graduate of Utah State.

FAMILIAR FOE - Friday is the third meeting this season between USU and SUU, and will complete the home, away, neutral cycle for the Aggies, having hosted the T-Birds in a tri-meet with Boise State on Jan. 27, won by SUU with a 194.525 while USU was second with a 194.050, and facing off at a neutral site in a tri-meet at BYU on Feb. 25, won by the Cougars with a 194.100 while the T-Birds were second with a 193.925 and the Aggies were third with a 193.625.

IN THE RANKINGS - Utah State is No. 44 in the Troester/GymInfo Women's Gymnastics National Rankings (as of March 5), by Regional Qualifying Scores (RQS), as the Aggies have a 193.325 RQS... SUU is No. 46 with an RQS of 193.240... The Aggies are seventh in the North Central Region while the T-Birds are eighth.

ABOUT UTAH STATE - In their last action, the Aggies were led by sophomore Paige Jones winning two events plus the all-around Monday in a dual against BYU, with the Cougars collecting the win with a 195.525 while the Aggies tallied a 193.675.

Jones won the all-around with a career-high 39.200, topping the 39.000 mark for the second time in her career, and took top honors on vault with a 9.850... She notched the same score on bars to share the event win with BYU's Raquel Willman.

Freshman Sarah Landes was second in the all-around with a 39.075, her fifth score of 39.000 or higher... Senior Rebecca Holliday notched a 37.900 in the all-around to place fourth, behind BYU's Willman in third with a 38.775.

Landes was the top Aggie gymnast on beam, placing fourth with a 9.800, just ahead of Hogan's career-best tying 9.775, which was matched by freshman Ashley Follett with a career-high along with BYU's Koval for a three-way tie for fifth... Jones and Landes both posted 9.800's on floor to tie for third with BYU's Mickell Merrell.

Utah State's 193.675 total came from a 48.300 on vault, a 48.350 on bars, 48.275 on beam and 48.750 on floor... Both the Aggies' beam and floor scores were their third-best on the respective events.

Utah State has a team RQS of 193.325, including leading WAC on bars with a 48.785 bars RQS, as well as posting RQS's of 48.285 on vault, 47.885 on beam and 48.585 on floor.

Freshman Sarah Landes is tied for in the WAC in the all-around with an RQS of 38.920, which ranks her seventh in the North Central region and tied for 40th in the nation... Landes also has a team-leading 9.810 floor RQS, which ranks sixth in the conference, tied for eighth in the region and tied for 75th in the nation, as well as leading USU and ranks tied for ninth in the conference and 22nd in the region on beam with a 9.685 RQS... She also is 13th in the league and tied for 18th in the region on vault with an RQS of 9.720.

Junior Amelia Montoya is tied for fifth in the WAC, tied for 12th in the North Central region and tied for 97th in the country on bars with a 9.790 RQS.

Sophomore Paige Jones is eighth in the conference, 15th in the region and 78th in the country in the all-around with an RQS of 38.340... Jones also has a vault RQS of 9.775 which ranks tied for seventh in the WAC and tied for 18th in the region. {See pg 11 for complete rankings}

WINNER, WINNER, CHICKEN DINNER - USU now has had six different gymnasts earn event wins, collecting 10 event titles, including four Aggie gymnasts tying for the bars title vs. SJSU on 2/10, part of a five-way logjam for the event title... Freshman Sarah Landes leads the team with five wins while senior Rebecca Holliday and sophomore Paige Jones have four event titles... Junior Amelia Montoya and freshmen Kaitlyn Betts and Susie Miller have one each.

WAC-BEST ON BARS - Utah State is back atop the WAC bars rankings, after sliding to second last week, the first ones by RQS's... USU's 48.785 RQS on bars ranks third in the North Central region and 25th in the country.

USU is fourth in the WAC in team RQS (193.325), as well as fourth in the conference on floor (48.585 RQS), while ranking fifth on both vault (48.285 RQS) and beam (47.885 RQS).

CAREER-HIGHS FOR 15 PLEASE ALEX - Utah State posted a season-high 15 career-highs on the way to its season-high 194.875 in the San Jose State dual on Feb. 10, including all six in the bars line-up... Freshman Sarah Landes led with five (all four events + all-around), followed by two by senior Rebecca Holliday (bars and beam), sophomore Paige Jones (bars and all-around) and junior Amanda Watamaniuk (bars and floor), as well as one each by junior Amelia Montoya (bars), along with freshmen Kaitlyn Betts (bars), Ashley Follett (beam) and Susie Miller (floor).

The 15 career-highs in the SJSU dual set the bar high, and the Aggies only had three career-bests in the dual against Sacramento State... USU had 13 each in the quad at Texas Woman's with Oklahoma and Centenary as well as at the tri-meet with Southern Utah and Boise State on Jan. 27.

AGGIES SCHEDULE FULL OF NUMBERS - A total of six of USU's opponents are in this week's Top 25... Two of those six are in the top seven as Oklahoma (Jan. 21) is No. 2 while Utah (Jan. 13) is No. 7... Other USU foes include No. 15 Boise State (Jan. 27/March 2), as No. 17 Arizona (March 16), No. 22 Denver (March 24) and No. 23 Arizona State (Feb. 3)... One other opponent is just outside the Top 25 in No. 31 San Jose State (Feb. 10/March 24).

ABOUT SOUTHERN UTAH - The T-Birds are returning home for the first time since Jan. 20, having their last six meets on the road... SUU is 3-9 on the season, posting a 193.150 in a dual at No. 15 Auburn, who didn't score anything lower than a 9.650 on the way to a 196.700... Auburn head coach Jeff Graba is a former Utah and USU assistant coach.

Junior Caitlin Kennedy was the only T-Bird all-arounder, finishing third with a 38.375... Kennedy was second on beam with a 9.825, while freshman Brittney Jensen was tied for fourth on floor with a 9.800... Freshman Jamie Armijo was the top SUU gymnast on vault with a 9.775 while freshman Rochelle Bernier led the team on bars with a 9.775.

Seniors Brooke Cersosimo and Lauren Jeffrey, along with juniors Alyssa Click and Michaela Chernoch are steadily returning to action after early-season injuries.

SUU has a team RQS 193.240, including RQS's of 48.555 on vault, 48.270 on bars, 48.080 on beam and 48.435 on floor.

Jensen tops the T-Birds on vault and floor, with 9.780 RQS's on both, while Bernier has the top bars RQS with a 9.710 and Kennedy leads the team with a 9.720 beam RQS.

Willman is the only Cougar gymnast with an all-around RQS, posting a 38.785, with a team-leading 9.735 on beam while adding RQS's of 9.810 on bars, 9.775 on vault and 9.730 on floor... Eyre-Pickard leads BYU on vault with a 9.815 and bars with a 9.820, while senior Kyrsten Koval tops the team on floor with a 9.765.

An Aggie alum and former USU assistant coach, SUU head coach Scott Bauman is in his 21st season at the helm of the T-Birds, earning WAC Coach of the Year and North Central Region Coach of the Year honors in 2010... Bauman has led SUU to four consecutive NCAA Regional appearances and led the T-Birds to the 2010 WAC Championship trophy.

SERIES HISTORY VS. SUU - Utah State has a combined 36-36 record all-time vs. Southern Utah, including 10-14 at Cedar City... Friday is the third of three regular-season meetings between USU and SUU, as the Aggies also met the T-Birds in a tri-meet with Boise State on Jan. 27 in USU's home-opener... SUU won that meet with a 194.525 while USU was second with a 194.050 and then No. 13 Boise State was third with a 193.525... The two teams were part of a tri-meet at BYU on Feb. 25, won by the Cougars witha 194.100 while the T-Birds were second with a 193.925 and the Aggies were third with a 193.625... SUU will also return to Logan on March 24 for the WAC Championships... The T-Birds have topped the Aggies in the last 17 meetings, taking all four regular-season meetings plus finishing higher at the WAC Championships a season ago... USU's last win over SUU was on a certain USU gymnastics' media relations contact birthday on Feb. 23, 2007 when USU scored a season-high 195.675 while SUU notched a 194.700.

SUPER 16 - The 16 gymnasts on USU's 2012 roster is the most on an Aggie roster since 2006, after having 15 on the 2011 roster, 13 on the 2010 ledger, 12 on the 2009 roster... USU had 14 gymnasts on each of the 2008 and 2007 rosters, while having 16 on the 2006 roster.

BEEHIVE STATERS - Utah State has three gymnasts from the state of Utah in senior Haley Hogan (Centerville/Viewmont HS/North Davis Gymnastics), sophomore Christina Nye (North Logan/Logan HS/Tytans Gymnastics) and freshman Ashley Follett (American Fork, Utah/American Fork HS/All American Gymnastics).

FLIPPING THE BOOKS TOO - Utah State had four gymnasts earn academic all-WAC honors last season, and three return, in seniors Haley Hogan and Rebecca Holliday, along with junior Amanda Watamaniuk.

LAST TIME OUT - Sophomore Paige Jones shared the Utah State gymnastics Senior Night spotlight by winning two events plus the all-around Monday night, as USU posted a 193.675. BYU won the dual with a 195.525, in the Aggies' final home regular-season meet at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

In USU's last home tune-up before hosting the Western Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday, March 24, Jones won the all-around with a career-high 39.200, topping the 39.000 mark for the second time in her career, and took top honors on vault with a 9.850. She notched the same score on bars to share the event win with BYU's Raquel Willman.

Landes was the top Aggie gymnast on beam, placing fourth with a 9.800, just ahead of Hogan's career-best tying 9.775, which was matched by freshman Ashley Follett with a career-high along with BYU's Koval for a three-way tie for fifth. Jones and Landes both posted 9.800's on floor to tie for third with BYU's Mickell Merrell.

Utah State's 193.675 total came from a 48.300 on vault, a 48.350 on bars, 48.275 on beam and 48.750 on floor. Both the Aggies' beam and floor scores were their third-best on the respective events. BYU's winning 195.525 resulted from a 48.575 on vault, 48.975 on bars, 49.050 on beam and 48.925 on floor.

The Aggies opened on vault with junior Amanda Watamaniuk leading off with a 9.525, followed by a 9.450 from Holliday. After a 9.475 by freshman Susie Miller, fellow freshman Kaitlyn Betts posted her career-best with a 9.700. Landes then tied her career-high with a 9.750. Jones then closed out the rotation with a 9.850, giving USU a 48.300 on vault. BYU notched a 48.975 on bars, led by a 9.850 by Willman, and had the first-rotation lead.

Swapping apparatuses, USU was on bars, again led of by Watamaniuk, posting a 9.775. After a 9.250 by junior Amelia Montoya, Holliday hung a 9.750 on the board. Landes then landed a 9.725 before Jones posted a 9.850 before Betts rounded out the rotation with an 8.400, giving USU a 48.350 on bars.

The Aggies had a 96.650 at the meet's midway point, while the Cougars extended their lead for a sub-total of 97.550 after recording a 48.975 on vault, led by 9.800's from both Willman and Natalie Eyre-Pickard.

On beam for rotation three, USU's rotation kicked off with a career-best 9.775 from Follett. After a 9.225 from redshirt-freshman Samantha Wagner, Jones notched a career-high 9.700. Hogan then capitalized on Senior Night by tying her career-best with a 9.775. After an 8.95 by Holliday, Landes completed the beam line-up with a 9.800 after a judge's inquisition.

USU notched a 48.275 on beam, which is its third-best of the season, while BYU scored a 48.925 on floor. After three rotations, the Cougars led, 146.475-144.925.

Like their first two rotations, the Aggies' fourth and final rotation, floor, was led off by Watamaniuk, posting a 9.700, followed by Holliday with a 9.775. After a 9.700 by Montoya, Jones registered a 9.800. After a 9.675 from Miller, Landes completed the night's action with a 9.800. That gave USU a 48.750 on floor for a final score of 193.675. BYU sealed the win with a 49.050 on beam for its final score of 195.525.

2011 REVIEW - Utah State finished with a No. 47 ranking in the Troester/GymInfo Women's Gymnastics Coaches Poll... USU had a final Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 192.935, a season-average of 192.483 and a season-high of 194.550... The Aggies were fourth in the WAC and eighth in the North Central final rankings... USU was also fourth in the WAC on two of the four apparatus: vault (48.400 RQS/48.173 avg./48.600 high), bars (48.555 RQS/48.308 avg./49.000 high), while ranking fifth on the other two events: beam (47.820 RQS/47.575 avg./48.625 high) and floor (48.625 RQS/48.427 avg./48.975 high).

Individually, Nicole Simoneau was fourth in the WAC, tied for 11th in the North Central region and tied for No. 55 in the country with a 9.835 RQS and a 9.765 average with a season-high of 9.875... Simoneau is also tied for 14th in the conference and 38th in the region on beam with a 9.710 RQS and a 9.584 average with a season-best of 9.750... Lyndsie Boone was tied for eighth in the WAC and tied for 24th in the region on vault with a 9.775 RQS and a 9.738 average with a high score on the season of 9.825... Jackie Dillon was tied for ninth in the WAC and tied for 21st in the region on floor with a 9.800 RQS and a 9.771 average, with a top season score of 9.850... Dillon was also sixth in the conference and 12th in the region as well as 76th in the nation in the all-around with a 38.720 RQS and 38.423 average with a season-high score of 38.150.
