PROVING PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATIONS WRONG - Last season, Utah State was picked sixth in the preseason poll but finished third at the WAC Championships, this season, the Aggies were picked fifth in the preseason... Stay tuned to see if USU can prove preseason prognostications wrong again!

USU WAC CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY - Utah State's best finish at the WAC Championships is third, done twice... The first was 2007 at Cedar City, Utah, hosted by Southern Utah, and then the Aggies matched that finish last year at Fullerton, Calif., hosted by Cal State Fullerton... The Aggies hosted the 2006 WAC meet their first year in the conference and also the first year that gymnastics was reinstated as a conference sport after a 13-year layoff, and USU finished fourth... Utah State's other finishes were fifth in 2008 at Boise, Idaho and sixth in 2009 at Sacramento, Calif... USU has had five WAC individual champions, including four by Jessica Parenti-Otte (bars, 2006; all-around, vault, bars in 2007) and Meagan Lewis co-champion on floor, the only shared conference title in the last four years, prior to last season's three-way logjam atop the medal stand between Boise State's Amy Glass, Sac State's Cayla Boyce and Southern Utah's Caitlin Kennedy.

USU CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY - Utah State has won five conference championships in the history of the Aggies gymnastics program, winning Big West Conference titles in 1992, 1996, 1998 and 2001, as well as a Western Gymnastics Conference crown in 2005... That was the last year of the WGC, before it made up two-thirds of the WAC as USU was joined in the WGC by Boise State, Southern Utah and Cal State Fullerton.

THIRD TIMES THE CHARM - Utah State is traveling to the Golden State of California for not only the third time this season (at San Jose State on Jan. 21, at Sacramento State on Feb. 11), but also the third-straight WAC Championships, as the 2009 meet was held at Sacramento, Calif., while the 2010 conference meet was in Fullerton, Calif... USU was sixth in 2009, while placing third in 2010, so mathematical process would lead numbers believers to think that the Aggies are due to finish first, as each of the previous two years USU has cut its previous placing in half.

ALL-WAC RETURNERS - Junior Rebecca Holliday is USU's lone returning all-WAC honoree from last season, earning second-team honors on both the bars and beam... The Aggies also welcome back three-time second-team all-WAC performer Nicole Simoneau, who redshirted last season... Simoneau earned second-team all-WAC honors on both bars and beam in 2009 after collecting second-team all-WAC accolades on bars in 2008.

UP NEXT - The top 36 teams in the country are selected to the NCAA Regional Championships on Saturday, April 5... The NCAA North Central Regionals are at Denver, Colo., hosted by the University of Denver... Utah State, currently ranked No. 45, will need to climb into the top 36 to qualify as a team, but the Aggies could send individuals.

TWITTER / FACEBOOK - Fans can also get live updates from the meets as well as other team information through the USU Twitter and Facebook pages - Twitter: www.twitter.com/USUGymnastics and Facebook: UtahStategymnastics

ABOUT UTAH STATE - The Aggies have a 192.935 Regional Qualifying Score (RQS), as well as a 192.541 average and a 194.550 high score on the season, which they hit the home finale on March 4... USU is currently fourth in the WAC, eighth in the North Central Region and No. 46 in the nation... In its last action and in its regular-season finale, Utah State tallied a season-high on vault to pace the Aggies to a 193.150 final score in a Saturday matinee meet at Southern Utah with No. 17 Iowa... The Hawkeyes won the tri-meet with a 196.450 while the host Thunderbirds tallied a 195.400.

Utah State is fourth in the WAC in not only team total (192.935 RQS/192.541 avg.), but also fourth in all four events, posting a 48.400 RQS and 48.211 average on vault, a 48.545 RQS and 48.293 average on bars, a 47.820 RQS and 47.611 average on beam as well as a 48.610 RQS and 48.425 average on floor.

Individually, junior Nicole Simoneau is fourth in the WAC on bars, as well as tied for ninth in the North Central region and tied for No. 50 in the country with a 9.835 RQS and a 9.768 average... Simoneau is also tied for 11th in the conference and 32nd in the region on beam with a 9.710 RQS and a 9.578 average... Senior Lyndsie Boone is tied for eighth in the WAC and 21st in the region on vault with a 9.775 RQS and a 9.747 average... Fellow senior Jackie Dillon is sixth in the WAC, 12th in the region and tied for 72nd in the nation in the all-around, logging a 38.620 RQS and a 38.405 average... Dillon also is tied for 10th in the conference and tied for 18th in the region on floor with a 9.795 RQS and a 9.768 average.

AGGIES' BEAM TEAM BEAMING - USU's streak of improving its beam score in each meet was stopped last week after the Aggies had bettered their season-high on beam in each of the last three meets, posting a 49.000 in the home finale dual vs. Cal State Fullerton... The 49.000 is just shy of the Aggie Top 10 lists, and would be ranked tied No. 11 in the USU record books, just behind the three-way tie for the No. 8 spot on Utah State's top 10 list of 49.100, last done on Feb. 6, 2004... Friday's 49.000 is the Aggies' highest beam score since Feb. 10, 2006, also posting a 49.000.

WINNER, WINNER CHICKEN DINNER - Through Utah State's 11 meets, the Aggies now have 17 individual winners after four event winners in the home finale on March 4, collecting three event titles and the all-around win... It was Utah State's second meet this season with three event winners, but the first of the year with a total of four titles counting the all-around... The 17 winners tops last year's season total of 10 and is closing in on the 19 in 2009, while the Aggies had 24 wins in 2008... So far this season, junior Nicole Simoneau leads the team with seven wins, all on bars, while seniors Lyndsie Boone and Jackie Dillon along with freshman Cammie Muhr all have three wins... Boone has two vault titles and one floor win, while Dillon has two all-around wins and a floor victory, and Muhr has three beam titles... Freshman Paige Jones owns one vault title, earning the first win of her Aggie career by winning the event at the Sacramento State dual.

MUHR SUCCESS ON BEAM - Freshman Cammi Muhr's beam title in the BYU/Arizona tri-meet gave USU its first individual title in the event since Nicole Simoneau won it on Feb. 6, 2009... Muhr now has three wins on the event after taking top honors at the Sacramento State dual and in the home finale vs. Cal State Fullerton... The beam titles is the most by a USU gymnast since at least 2005, bettering Jessica Parenti-Otte who won two in both 2006 and 2007.

7-11 4 SIMONEAU - Junior Nicole Simoneau could be sponsored by the slurpee wielding convenience store if it were allowable by NCAA rules, as the junior has won the bars title outright or shared the top honor in seven of USU's 11 meets this season, winning it in the Southern Utah dual, the tri-meet with Arizona and BYU, the BYU quad meet with Southern Utah and Iowa State, the dual at Southern Utah and the home dual vs. Boise State, the dual at Boise State and the home finale dual vs. Cal State Fullerton... The only meets that she didn't win the bars title was at the San Jose State tri-meet with Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the dual at Sacramento State, the home dual vs. Utah, (her first non-win at home) and the tri-meet at Southern Utah with Iowa.

LAST TIME OUT - In its regular-season finale, Utah State gymnastics tallied a season-high on vault to pace the Aggies to a 193.150 final score in a Saturday matinee meet at Southern Utah with No. 17 Iowa at SUU's Centrum. The Hawkeyes won the tri-meet with a 196.450 while the host Thunderbirds tallied a 195.400.

Saturday was Utah State's first meeting with Iowa since 1991, while it was the fourth meeting this season alone with Southern Utah and the Aggies will see the T-Birds again next week in the Western Athletic Conference Gymnastics Championships on Saturday, March 19 at San Jose, Calif.

The tri-meet Saturday also had special meaning for USU head coach Jeff Richards, as he was an assistant at both SUU and Iowa, coaching at Southern Utah from 1991-98, earning his degree from SUU in 1995, and was an assistant coach at Iowa from 2005-2008, before coming to Utah State. He faced both of his former bosses, as he was an assistant under the other two head coaches in Saturday's tri-meet, coaching under SUU head coach Scott Bauman from 1991-98 and under Iowa head coach Larissa Libby from 2005-2008, before becoming head coach of the USU program in the summer of 2008. SUU also honored Bauman, as Saturday was the final regular-season meet for his 20th season and the T-Birds held a ceremony celebrating his 20th anniversary.

Iowa won with a 196.450 score, posting a vault score of 49.325, a 49.175 on bars, a 48.925 on beam and a floor score of 49.025. Host SUU notched a 196.450 final tally, recording a 49.325 vault score, a 49.175 on bars, a 48.925 beam posting and a 49.025 on floor. USU scored a season-high 48.600 on vault, a 48.475 on bars, a 47.500 on beam and a 48.575 on floor for its final score of 193.150.

The Aggies fall to 2-14 overall while the Hawkeyes are now 11-6 and the T-Birds stand at 9-6 with the split.

Seniors Lyndsie Boone and Jackie Dillon tied each other for fourth in the all-around, both posting 38.875's, while freshman Rachel Vaske was eighth with a 38.000. Iowa's Rebecca Simbhudas won the all-around title with a 39.375. Boone was USU's highest placer on vault, finishing 10th with a 9.800, as well as the top Aggie on beam scoring a 9.700 to tie for seventh. Dillon was the highest Utah State gymnast on floor, tying for seventh with a 9.775, while junior Nicole Simoneau was the top Aggie on bars with a 9.750 to place eighth.

Maya Wickus of Iowa captured top honors on vault with a 9.925, while teammate Houry Gebeshian won the bars crown with a 9.875. Simbhudas and SUU's Alyssa Click tied for the beam title, each posting a 9.875, while Iowa's Jessa Hansen was the top floor performance with a 9.875.

For rotation two, Utah State was on beam, with Boone starting the rotation with a 9.700, followed by a 9.125 by Vaske and a 9.575 from junior Haley Hogan. After a 9.200 by Simoneau, Dillon logged a 9.675 before freshman Cammi Muhr scored a 9.350 to complete the lineup. After scoring a season-high in its previous three meets, USU scored a 47.500 on beam Saturday, for a 95.975 score at the meet's midway point. Iowa posted a 49.025 on floor for a 97.950 leading score while SUU scored a 48.825 on bars for a 97.750 halfway posting.

The Aggies were on floor for the third event, and Vaske opened with a 9.575. Muhr then notched a 9.750 before junior Amelia Montoya recorded a 9.625. After a 9.675 by Boone, Jones scored a 9.750, preceding Dillon with a rotation-closing 9.775.

That gave Utah State a 48.575 floor total for a 144.550 score after three rotations. Iowa increased its lead to a 147.275 total after notching a 49.325 on vault, while Southern Utah posted a 48.650 on beam for a 146.400 three-event total.

Shifting to vault for the fourth and final event, USU led off its season-high score posting with a 9.600 from Holliday. After a 7.850 by Muhr, Vaske scored a 9.650, just shy of her career-high of 9.675. Jones then recorded a 9.775, preceding Boone's 9.800, also just shy of her career-best of 9.825. USU posted a 48.600 on vault for its final score of 193.150. The Hawkeyes sealed their win with a 49.175 on bars for their winning score of 196.450 while the T-Birds tallied a 49.000 on floor for their second-place score of 195.400.

HEAD COACH Jeff Richards - Jeff Richards took over the reigns of the Utah State gymnastics program in July, 2008, becoming only the second head coach in the Aggies' history after legendary coach Ray Corn retired after 31 seasons.

Last season, Richards guided Utah State to a third-place finish at the WAC Championships, tying USU's best WAC finish in the Aggies' five years in the league, matching the 2007 third-place finish. Two Aggies earned all-WAC honors as Heather Heinrich earned second-team all-WAC honors by finishing fourth in the all-around. Sophomore Rebecca Holliday also earned second-team all-WAC accolades by finishing tied for fifth on bars and tying for sixth on beam. Richards also mentored three USU NCAA Regional qualifiers in all-arounders Heinrich and Lyndsie Boone as well as bars specialist Jackie Dillon.

Richards, who was born and raised in Logan, is a 1988 graduate of Logan High School and was a student assistant coach at Utah State from 1988-90.

Prior to USU, Richards spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Iowa, where he was named the 2008 North Central Region Assistant Co-Coach of the Year with fellow Iowa assistant, Talya Vexler. The award came after Richards helped the Hawkeyes to a 10-4-1 record, a ranking as high as No. 19 in the national polls and finishing third in the Big Ten.

Richards, who has over 20 years of collegiate gymnastics experience, served as Iowa's main bars coach and spotter for all four events. He was also in charge of travel, equipment and scheduling for the Hawkeyes. In 2008, Richards coached the Hawkeyes to a season-high 49.0 on bars in a dual meet against Iowa State. He also coached senior Katie Burke to a first-place performance on bars against Illinois and Michigan State. Richards also coached freshman Rebecca Simbhudas to first-place performances on bars twice.

Richards began his coaching career as a student-assistant at Utah State from 1988-1990, before transferring to Southern Utah, where he finished his student-assistant coaching duties and earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from SUU in 1995. While at Southern Utah, Richards was an assistant coach for the Thunderbirds under SUU head coach Scott Bauman, also a former USU assistant coach, until 1998. From 1998-2004 Richards was head coach at the University of Wisconsin-Stout and was head coach at Winona State University from 2004-05 before joining Iowa in 2005.

While at Wisconsin-Stout, Richards earned the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year Award for both the 2000 and 2001 seasons, and the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Coach of the Year honors for the 2000 season. He coached seven NCGA All-Americans and eight all-conference award winners at Wisconsin-Stout, leading the Blue Devils to the 2001 NCGA National Championships. UW-Stout broke its team-best score each of Richards' six seasons at the helm.

At Winona State, Richards mentored two gymnasts who qualified for the NCGA National Championships.

During his stint at Southern Utah, Richards helped increase the team score from 170 to 188 in his first year, as well as coaching individual regional qualifiers each year and one national qualifier, and highly increased the Thunderbirds' recruiting caliber.

While at Utah State, Richards helped the Aggies to two appearances in the NCAA Regional Championships in both 1989 and 1990, and coached Tana Davis in the all-around to the NCAA National Championships both seasons. Richards also helped coached all-High Country Athletic Conference honoree Stephanie Green in 1990.

Richards has two daughters, Kanyon (16) and Kennedy (13) who live in Menomonie, Wisc.
