No. 23 Utah State is back home this Saturday to host the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference Championships, welcoming No. 11 Boise State, No. 19 Southern Utah and BYU to the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum at 6 p.m.
The Aggies come into Saturday's meet after recording the seventh-best team score in school history on the bars with a 49.275 on March 10 against No. 19 Southern Utah. Unfortunately for Utah State, it had to count two falls on beam for the second straight meet, which helped the Thunderbirds sweep the regular season series from USU with a 195.675-194.600 victory in front of 1,413 fans at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
Sophomore Madison Ward was one of a trio of Aggies to tie for first on bars and the sophomore from Rexburg, Idaho, did so with a personal-best score of 9.875. Junior Melanie Oster and freshman Brittany Jeppesen also tied for first on bars for Utah State. For that duo, the 9.875s matched their career highs.
Ward also went on to tie for first on floor with a 9.875. She now has a team-leading 10 event titles on the season, including seven on floor, and has finished in the top three on 17 separate occasions throughout the year.
Utah State enters the MRGC Championships with a Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 195.830, while Boise State has an RQS of 196.835, BYU has an RQS of 195.460 and Southern Utah has an RQS of 196.300.
The Aggies will begin the meet on bars, before rotating to beam, floor and vault. A live stream (subscription required) is available on FloGymnastics, while live scores for the meet will be available at utahstateaggies.com.
With its team RQS of 195.830, Utah State is mathematically locked in for the NCAA Regional Championships, which will be held on Saturday, April 1, at six different sites across the country, including Fayetteville, Ark., Gainesville, Fla., Champaign, Ill., Lincoln, Neb., Seattle, Wash., and Morgantown, W.Va. This will be the Aggies' fourth straight trip to the NCAA Regionals.
AGGIES RANKED NO. 23 AGAIN
Utah State remained at No. 23 with a Regional Qualifying Score of 195.830 in the latest Road To Nationals team rankings, which were announced Monday. This is the fourth consecutive week the Aggies have been ranked in the top 25.
Utah State is one of three teams from the MRGC ranked in the top 25. Boise State dropped one spot to No. 11 with an RQS of 196.835, while Southern Utah jumped up two spots to No. 19 with a 196.300. To obtain the regional qualifying score (RQS), the high score is eliminated and the remaining five scores are averaged.
