LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's gymnastics staff was well-represented in Monday's announcement of the North Central Region seasonal awards as Josh Nilson and Andi Dolinsky were named Assistant Coaches of the Year and Dr. Brian Evans was named the Administrator of the Year.
The awards are voted on by the coaching staffs of each program in the region. Air Force head coach Doug Day was named Head Coach of the Year, while Minnesota sophomore Lindsay Mable earned Gymnast of the Year honors.
Dolinsky and Nilson were brought to Utah State by first-year head coach Nadalie Walsh. As a staff, they led the Aggies to a 10-17 record, culminating in the team's first NCAA Regional Championship appearance since 2007. The team averaged the highest vault score in program history with a 48.904, while several gymnasts claimed top spots on individual events.
"I'm excited for Josh and Andi and I'm very proud of them. It's a well-deserved award," Walsh said. "I'm really thankful that the coaching community can recognize the change Utah State has gone through. It's a big deal to receive this from your peers."
Nilson's appointment at Utah State was a homecoming for him as he previously spent six seasons as a part of the program. Prior to his return to Logan, he spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Woman's University.
"I consider this award recognition for the entire staff's efforts and successes this season. It is remarkable what can be accomplished when the staff and team pull together and buy into a program. Without Nadalie's leadership this year, our success would not have been possible. I can't say enough about her and the way she leads this program. I share this recognition with her, the rest of the staff and the ladies on the team."
Dolinsky came to Utah State with Walsh, previously serving as a graduate assistant coach at Ball State. She attended and competed at UC Davis from 2004-09 and was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Year in both 2007 and 2009.
"I'm honored to receive this award along with Josh. It has been an incredible year working with this talented group of athletes," Dolinsky said. "The success we've had in just one year reflects the dedication and drive of our team and our staff."
As the Senior Associate Athletic Director overseeing student services, Evans has been at Utah State since 2000.
"I was happy to nominate Brian because I wanted him to get the recognition he deserved for all the work he has done to get the new Mountain Rim Gymnastics conference a shot at being sanctioned by the NCAA," Walsh said. "I am so glad the rest of the coaches in the North Central Region decided to vote for him as well."
This season, Evans worked closely with the NCAA in getting the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Championship to be recognized as an official conference. Pending final approval, the MRGC will be officially sanctioned in July.
"I'm extremely honored to be selected for this award, given the caliber of institutions within the region and the fantastic job their administrators do for their teams," Evans said. "This recognition is a testament to the commitment we have as an administration to gymnastics and all our sports programs."
