Dec. 19, 2013
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State gymnastics has been picked to finish fifth in the first-ever Mountain Rim Gymnastics Championship preseason poll.
The Aggies earned four points in the poll that was voted on by the MRGC coaches. The fight for first-place was a close one, with Boise State just edging Denver with 15 points and three first-place votes to the Pioneers' 13 points and two first-place votes. Southern Utah came in third with 11 points, while BYU is fourth with seven points.
The MRGC is not currently officially recognized by the NCAA. The teams involved formed the group when neither the Mountain West or Western Athletic Conferences sponsored gymnastics. Preparations are underway for the MRGC to be official for the 2015 season.
The Aggies return three 2013 NCAA Regionals participants in Stefanie Daley, Sarah Landes and Paige Jones as well as 10 other letterwinners. Joining them are four freshmen who are all expected to contribute. Utah State will begin the 2014 season under first-year head coach Nadalie Walshon the road at Iowa on Jan. 11. USU competes at Southern Utah on Jan. 17 before returning to Logan to host another in-state rival in BYU in Jan. 24.
