Soccer Shuts Out Southern Utah In Exhibition Game
Aug. 25, 2001
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's women's soccer team opened the season with a 7-0 blow out against Southern Utah in an exhibition game Saturday at Tower Field.
"I feel great about today," said first year head coach Jen Kennedy Croft. "It's great to score that many goals. It's good to see us as a cohesive unit and we're excited we played well together as a team."
In all five different Aggies scored on the day, including junior Michelle Eversman and sophomore Amber Tracy who each turned in two goals a piece. The day's scoring broke open early as junior Brigid Turner knocked one in from 20 feet out less then two minutes into the game. Eversman followed, scoring her first goal of the day six minutes later to give Utah State a 2-0 lead that would remain through the completion of the first half.
The second half began much like the first for USU as junior Jessica Ebner scored less then two minutes into the half off a pass from senior Sara Cowley (Buie). Cowley then scored an unassisted goal of her own, a boot from 20 yards out, at the 59:22 mark. Eversman scored the Aggies fifth goal and her second goal of the day off a pass from Ebner to put the game completely out of reach for Southern Utah. Sophomore Amber Tracy scored the Aggies final two goals of the game knocking one in from four feet out off a pass from Maureen Dyslin, and then nailing her second goal on a break away from 15 feet deep.
Overall, Utah State's defense shut down Southern Utah as USU not only kept the T-birds scoreless through 90 minutes of play but also outshot SUU 26-5.
"We played good team defense and created some opportunities with our defense," said Kennedy Croft. "It's good to have a win whether it's a scrimmage or not and it's good to see them hitting the back of the net so often."
The Aggies will begin regular season play next weekend when they host Northwestern Fri., August 31 at 4 p.m. USU will then return the next day, Sat., Sept. 1, to play 10th-ranked Washington at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at Tower Field.
