Dana Peart Scores Second Goal Of Season As Soccer Ends In 1-1 Tie With Southern Utah
Aug. 28, 2005
LOGAN, Utah - Sophomore Dana Peart scored her second goal in as many matches as Utah State soccer tied Southern Utah, 1-1, on Sunday. Peart's second goal of the season matches her season goal total from a year ago.
The Aggies continue to look for their first win of the year as they go to 0-1-1 with the tie. Sunday's match was the season opener for the Thunderbirds as they open at 0-0-1. Utah State is now 2-0-1 all-time against Southern Utah.
"I was glad we not only played well for 90 minutes, but for 110 minutes," said head coach Heather Cairns. "Now we can stop talking about playing together and working hard, and actually start talking tactic; which finishing is a part of tactic."
Peart broke the scoreless tie in the 66th minute as Charity Weston placed a cross from the right side to Candice Clark, who was sitting just outside the eight-yard box. Clark immediately gave a touch pass to Peart, who was lurking by the far post and beat SUU goalie, Holly Davis. The assist was a career first for Clark, while Weston now has six career dimes.
SUU evened the score just over three minutes later as the Aggie defense was unable to clear the ball and Tara Olson found the back of the net at 68:44.
Utah State seemed to have the advantage all day as it booted 13 shots to SUU's five in the first half and finished the match out-shooting the Thunderbirds 27-12. The Aggies also had a five-to-one advantage in corner kicks.
Two of USU's best chances to score came with seven seconds left in regulation and five seconds left in the first overtime.
The first opportunity came as the Aggies were pressuring inside the 18-yard box and the ball bounced out to a charging Peart, who plastered a shot that was stopped by Davis. Weston then had a shot to end the match in the first overtime but her shot from the right side was just a little too high as it bounced of the crossbar.
Kelli Allred worked the entire match for the Aggies, recording a career-high eight saves. Davis had seven saves for SUU. Southern Utah was also issued two yellow cards during the match.
Utah State concludes its three-match home stand with a showdown against UNLV on Fri., Sept. 5. The match starts at 4 p.m.
