Soccer Scores First, But Loses At Gonzaga 2-1
Sept. 3, 2004
SPOKANE, Wash. - Utah State's soccer team scored first, but then allowed Gonzaga to produce a come from behind win as the Aggies fell 2-1 at Gonzaga here Friday afternoon. USU dropped to 1-2 on the year, while Gonzaga improved to 2-1.
After a scoreless first half, Utah State scored in the game's 47th minute as Charlsie Harris hit the inside of the net off a pass from Charity Weston on a corner kick.
However, the Bulldogs bounced right back with a goal of their own 10 minutes later. Gonzaga's game winner came with 3:36 remaining in the contest off a penalty kick.
"We scored early in the second half, but then we lost our momentum and they scored 10 minutes later," said USU head coach Heather Cairns. "The goal was a nice goal, but we just didn't put together a 90-minute game."
Harris' goal was her second of the season as she netted one in the Aggies' previous game against Weber State. Harris also scored the only goal in USU's 1-0 win against Gonzaga last year.
"We gave up a 1-0 lead and lost the game," Cairns said. "We have to learn from this. It cannot happen in conference play. We will also see how we bounce back on Sunday."
The Aggies continue their road trip with a game at Eastern Washington in nearby Cheney, Wash. on Sunday at noon mountain time.
