Soccer Shuts Out Eastern Washington, 3-0
Sept. 8, 2002
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State (2-1-1) women's soccer defeated Eastern Washington (0-4) at the Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field Sunday, moving the Aggies' home record to 2-0-1 at the field. USU's three goals came from three different players - Charlsie Harris, Lacey (Miles) Poulton and Kami Kelley. Harris, a freshman, and Kelley, a transfer from Weber State, are new to the USU program this season.
Harris scored her first collegiate goal as an Aggie, putting USU up 1-0 11 minutes into the game, off a corner kick by Megan (Edge) Tanner. Just after halftime, Poulton scored her second goal of the year as Katie Grothkopp, EWU's goalkeeper, deflected the ball out of the goal and back at Poulton.
With a little more than 10 minutes left in the match, Utah State's third score was Kelly's first as an Aggie, and came off an assist by Claire Schend, her second on the year.
"Obviously the shutout is really big for us," USU head coach Jen Kennedy Croft said, "Our defense was better and our midfield is working really well with our forwards. I'm very pleased."
The Utah State defense held Eastern Washington to just four shots in the game, all in the second half. USU is now 2-1-1 against the Big Sky this season, and Sunday's win marks the Aggies' largest margin of victory since defeating UC Riverside by an identical score on Oct. 12, 2001.
The Aggies continue their five-game early season homestand Friday against Southern Utah (0-2 entering the weekend) at 4 p.m. Admission to all home Utah State soccer games is free. Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field is located on 1400 North, at approximately 1100 East in Logan.
