Soccer Falls To Nevada On The Road Friday Night
Sept. 18, 2004
RENO, Nev. - Utah State soccer was unable to record its first road win of the season as it dropped a 1-0 decision to the Nevada Wolf Pack here Friday night. The Aggies have now gone winless on the road since defeating Weber State in Ogden, Utah on Sept. 4 of last season, a span of 10 matches.
The loss drops the Aggies to 2-5 on the season, while Nevada recorded its first win of the season and improved to 1-6 overall.
"I think that the monkey we have felt on our backs on the road has become a very big elephant," said head coach Heather Cairns. "We played pretty well, but we need to get all our ducks in a row if we want to be peaking as we head into conference play."
Nevada's Annie Baxter headed what proved to be the deciding goal of the match past USU goalie Megan Mills at the 53:10 mark. Baxter connected on a cross from the Wolf Pack's Brianne Wahrenbrock that held up and allowed Nevada to get into the win column this season.
The Aggies had their chances in the match, recording five shots on goal. One of the closest shots by an Aggie came when Lacy (Gustaveson) Kennington rattled a shot off the cross bar.
Mills played the entire match in net for Utah State, recording four saves. Nevada's Megan Tarpenning picked up the shutout with five saves. Coming into Friday's match Tarpenning had a goals-against average of 3.39.
USU's five shots on goal came from five different players, including, Kennington, Katie Keller, Charlsie Harris, Charity Weston, and Dana Peart.
The Aggies play their sixth road match of the season on Sunday, as they travel to Sacramento State for a 1 p.m. match.
