Sept. 21, 2013
SALT LAKE CITY - Utah State soccer was not able to recover from three second-half goals, falling to the University of Utah, 3-0, at Ute Field Friday night under the lights.
With the loss Utah State falls to 4-2-2 and are still in search of its first win against the Utes in Salt Lake. Utah improves to 4-1-3 this season with the victory. USU was shutout for just the second time this season. The loss was the first of the season on the road for the Aggies this year.
"After the first goal we really let down. We let a second goal in after four minutes, and that's not the kind of mental toughness that we need to have to be successful. We have got to be able to fight back from a one-goal deficit. Utah was good tonight; they were better than us tonight," USU head coach Heather Cairns said.
Utah State earned the first shot of the match when sophomore midfielder Maris Hamblin fought for a shot that went just wide in the 39th minute.
Baylee Nielsen applied pressure to the Aggie defense with a shot that sailed over the head of sophomore goalkeeper Jeannie Woller. Avery Ford had the first shot on goal of the night with a shot that was corralled by Woller in the 27th minute.
The Aggies first shot on goal came off a direct kick off the leg of junior defender Taryn Rose in the 36th minute.
The half would end with the same score as it started, 0-0. Utah out-shot the Aggies 9-3 in the first half w ith two shots on goal compared to USU's one. Both defenses stood strong in a very physical first half.
The Utes struck first in the second half when Taylor Slattery scored her first goal of the season in the 59th minute. The play began with a corner kick by Hall to give USU the 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, the Utes took a 2-0 advantage when Kaycee Buckley split two USU defenders and snuck the ball past Woller.
The Utes added their last goal of the match in the 72nd minute. After a foul was called on Utah State, Katie Taylor knocked the penalty kick to the far right side to seal the win.
