Sept. 23, 2004
LOGAN, Utah - Nicole (Feuz) Gooch recorded just the seventh hat trick in Utah State soccer history and Charlsie Harris added two goals and an assist to lead Utah State to a 5-0 blowout of UC Davis here Thursday. The last time a USU player recorded a hat trick was during the 2002 season when Brigid Turner put up three goals against Idaho.
The win kept Utah State a perfect 3-0 at home this season and brought its overall record to 3-5, while UC Davis fell to 2-6 overall.
"We really played well today and were able to work together in creating in the attack," said head coach Heather Cairns.
Utah State came out as the aggressor Thursday, recording the first five shots of the match. UC Davis was held without a shot for the first 13 minutes of the game before Roxanne Croze tallied UCD's first shot of the match.
Gooch broke the scoreless tie at 25:28 as Lacy (Gustaveson) Kennington placed a cross on the right side that Gooch punched past UC Davis goalie Krystyn Lizak.
Gooch's second goal came on the USU counter attack. Kennington intercepted a pass on an attempted run by UC Davis and hit a slashing Gooch on the right side of the goalie box for the chip shot.
"Nicole did a great job of stepping up (Thursday)," said Cairns. "She has a knack for getting in scoring position and being able to finish her shots. We should also give credit to Lacy, who did a fantastic job of setting up Nicole's first two goals."
At the end of the first 45 minutes, USU led 2-0 and had recorded 10 shots to UC Davis' two.
With UC Davis' Megan Daws in net to start the second period, Gooch started the second period right where she left off in the first. With the first shot taken by either team in the period, Gooch took a diagonal cross from Harris and booted it past Daws from 15-yards out.
Harris' first goal of the match and USU's fourth, came at 55:34 off a scramble from the right side. Harris then added her second goal and the final goal of the match at 58:31 on a USU counter attack that led to Tiffany Jones finding Harris for the goal.
