Flynn Second-Half Goal Lifts Aggie Soccer Over UNLV, 2-1, Sunday
Sept. 29, 2013
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - With a breakaway goal in the 71st minute, senior forward Jennifer Flynn guided Utah State soccer to a crucial, 2-1, road win against UNLV Sunday at Peter Johann Field in Las Vegas, Nev., on Sunday.
With the come-from-behind win, Utah State halted a four-match winless streak and gave the Aggies their first Mountain West Conference victory. Utah State is now 5-4-2 this season overall and 1-1 in MW action. The Aggies handed the Rebels their first home loss of the season, now holding a 6-4-2 overall record and are 1-1 in league play.
"Today we needed some people to step up and be heroes, and we got that. Jeannie (Woller) made a great save with about 10 minutes left, along with Jayne (Robison) and Jessica (Brooksby) connecting on the corner kick and Jenn (Flynn) finishing on the second goal. It is great to have Jenn back on the field and she is starting to get her groove back after missing the early part of the season with injuries. Those were just some of the heroes that showed up on the scoresheet, but there were also some heroes that the only stat they earned today is a win, and that is the most important stat today, but Lexie Morgan led our midfielders, who were solid all day and our defenders did a great job of getting to balls, getting headers on balls and kept UNLV from going forward. We just had a lot of people do some very good things today," USU head coach Heather Cairns said.
The Rebels wasted no time getting on the board in the first minute of the match when the Mountain West's second-leading scorer Jenn Wolfe scored her fifth goal of the season. Wolfe took a pass from Courtney Botelho and blasted it off the right post for the early 1-0 lead.
In the 30th minute, Utah State had its first shot of the match off the foot of freshman defender Shyani Terukina that went just wide.
Freshman midfielder Jayne Robinson scored the equalizer in the 35th minute. Off the cornerkick by fellow freshman midfielder/forward Jessica Brooksby, Robison scored her first collegiate goal with a header. The assist was the first of the season for Brooksby. The goal was also the first for USU since Sept. 7.
The half ended with the score knotted, 1-1. UNLV out-shot USU, 5-3, in the first half.
In the 71st minute, Utah State took the lead when Flynn scored her second goal of the season. Flynn took control dribbling past the Rebel defense and beating UNLV goalkeeper Kylie Wassell.
Senior forward Mari Miyashiro added some late pressure with a shot to the lower right corner that made Wassell leave her feet for a diving save in the 83rd minute.
For the match, UNLV out-shot Utah State, 14-7, but both squads had five on goal. The Rebels had eight cornerkicks in the match compared to three by the Aggies. Woller was solid in goal with four saves, while UNLV's Wassell had three saves.
Utah State now returns home for a pair of MW matches. The Aggies will host Air Force on Friday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. USU will end the homestand against Wyoming on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m.
