Aggies Tie Pacific In Big West Soccer Action
Oct. 3, 2004
STOCKTON, Calif. - Utah State soccer picked-up its first road point of the season with a 0-0 (2OT) tie of conference opponent Pacific here Sunday. Sunday's tie stops a USU road losing streak dating back to Oct. 19 of last season, a span of nine games. The Aggies are still winless on the road in their last 12 matches, but are 9-2-1 at home in that same span.
The tie put the Aggies' record at 3-7-1 on the year and 0-1-1 in the Big West, while the Tigers moved to 5-3-3 and 1-0-1.
"Our match today was a real back and forth battle," said head coach Heather Cairns. "We obviously would have liked to come out with a win, but points on the road all add up when you're playing conference matches."
Utah State goalie Megan Mills and the rest of the Aggie defense kept the game close as Pacific notched three shots to just one by the Aggies in the opening period. Mills recorded two of her five saves in the first half.
Both teams came out more aggressive in the second half as Utah State tallied seven shots and Pacific rang-up eight. Mills made a game-saving save in the 74th minute as Pacific's Carmen Padilla found herself loose on the left side of the box. However, the open shot was thwarted by Mills, who recorded her first shutout of the season. Mills has now lowered her season goals-against average to 0.84.
Offensively, the Aggies were led by Chanel Blaquiere, Charlsie Harris and Charity Weston. Blaquiere was dangerous putting two of her three shots on goal, while Harris and Weston had two shots a piece, with one on goal.
Utah State has a lighter schedule this week with just one conference game at Idaho. The Aggies and Vandals will match-up on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. (MST)
