Peart Leads Aggies Past UC Irvine On Sunday

LOGAN, Utah - Freshman forward Dana Peart scored Utah State's first goal of the match, and later added an assist on the game-winning goal by Chanel Blaquiere, to help the Aggies push their unbeaten streak to four matches with a 3-1 victory against UC Irvine in Big West soccer action here Sunday. The win also kept the Aggies spotless at home this season as they improved to 5-0 at Bell Field.
USU improved to 6-7-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the Big West with the triumph, while UC Irvine dropped to 4-10-2 and 1-4-0 in the loss. Sunday's win also pushed USU's unbeaten streak at home against conference opponents to seven matches (6-0-1) dating back to last season.
"We expected a battle [Sunday] and that is exactly what we got," said head coach Heather Cairns. "Dana's goal was key and it really got us going. Megan [Mills] also had a huge game and came up with a big save right at the end for us."
Peart broke the scoreless tie in the 28th minute as Utah State dropped a free kick near the far post where Michelle Haws posted the first shot on the attack that was subsequenlty punched out by Irvine's goalie. Blaquiere then took another swipe at the loose ball, but her shot was deflected off an Anteater defender and dropped in front of Peart, who booted the ball past the keeper on the near side of the goal. The goal was Peart's second of her young career.
The Aggies took the 1-0 lead into halftime as they narrowly outshot Irvine, 9-8.
USU made it 2-0 in the second half as Peart played a ball into Sierra Smith in the middle of the field. Smith then popped the ball up about eight yards out and Blaquiere was able to get above the Anteater defenders and head the ball into the net on the far side of the goal. The goal was Blaquiere's first of the year and sixth in her career.
The Aggies took the 3-0 lead when midfielder Tiffany Jones stole the ball on an Irvine counter attack, dribbled about ten yards and then found Nicole Gooch running down the near side for Gooch's team-high eighth goal of the season at the 71:31 mark.
Before Utah State had much time to celebrate, the Anteaters countered 13 seconds later as Britney Webster hit Gina Scachetti on the near side to break the USU shutout.
Both teams kept the opposing goalies busy as Utah State posted 12 shot on goal to UCI's 11. Megan Mills tallied a season-high 10 saves to get USU's first win (1-7-1) against the Anteaters in school history, while Marrisa Welliver stopped nine shots in the loss. continued... (2-2)
The Aggies take their four-match conference unbeaten streak on the road next week to face Cal State Fullerton on Fri., Oct. 22 at 8 p.m. and UC Riverside on Sun. Oct., 24 at 2 p.m.
