Utah State Soccer Begins Practice Wednesday
Aug. 6, 2013
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State soccer begins practice for the 2013 season on Wednesday, Aug. 7. The Aggies will take to Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field from 4-6 p.m., for the first time this year.
After eight seasons in the Western Athletic Conference, Utah State began the transition to the Mountain West in July.
Utah State will bring back 17 letterwinners and eight starters from last season's squad that reached the NCAA Tournament with a 13-3-6 record. The Aggies also captured their second-straight WAC Tournament title in USU's final season in the league. Utah State returns three all-WAC honorees in seniors Mari Miyashiro and Jennifer Flynn along with junior Taryn Rose. Miyashiro was named to the first team, while Flynn and Rose earned second-team honors.
Flynn is the Aggies' top returning scorer, leading the team with seven goals and two assists for 16 points. Miyashiro was tied for second in scoring last season with four goals and a career-high six assists for 14 points.
Sophomore Jeannie Woller looks to continue the Aggies' historically strong play in goal. Utah State's three previous goalkeepers, Ashlyn Mulford, Molli Merrill and Ali Griffin all earned all-WAC honors during their time in net. Woller played in six matches last season, starting two. She allowed only two goals in nearly 400 minutes for a 0.46 goals against average.
The Aggies will meet several familiar foes in league play as Boise State, Fresno State, Nevada and San Jose State were WAC opponents. The MW will play a nine-match league schedule this season with the top eight teams advancing to the MW Tournament held on the campus of New Mexico, Nov. 4-9.
After an exhibition against Southern Utah in Cedar City on Aug. 17, USU opens regular-season play against Creighton on Aug. 23 at 4 p.m.
Once again, admission to all Utah State soccer matches is free.
