Aug 15, 2013
LOGAN, Utah - Three Utah State soccer players were named to the College Sports Madness Mountain West Conference Preseason Team; it was announced Thursday.
After eight seasons in the Western Athletic Conference the Aggies will play their first season in the Mountain West this fall.
Senior forwards Mari Miyashiro and Jennifer Flynn and junior defender Taryn Rose all earned first-team honors. All three earned all-WAC honors last season as Miyashiro earned first-team honors, while Flynn and Rose were named to the second team.
Flynn led the team in scoring in 2012 with seven goals and two assists for 16 points, while Miyashiro was tied for second with four goals and a career-high six assists. Rose was part of the stingy Aggie defense that allowed only 13 goals last season for a 0.55 goals against average.
San Diego State which enters the season ranked No. 11 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Preseason Poll, tied the Aggies for the most on the first team with three. Overall, the Aztecs and Boise State had the most players honored with five. SDSU swept the individual awards as Hannah Keane and Haley Palmer were named Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively. Erika Leal was named Freshman of the Year, while Mike Friesen was Coach of the Year.
The Aggies return 17 letterwinners and eight starters from last year's team that finished 13-3-6 and captured their second-straight WAC Tournament title, while reaching their second NCAA Tournament in as many years.
Utah State begins the 2013 campaign on Saturday, Aug. 17 with an exhibition against in-state foe Southern Utah at 10 a.m at Cedar City, Utah. The first regular-season match will take place on Friday, Aug. 23 against Creighton in Logan at 4 p.m. Last season, the Aggies and the Bluejays tied, 1-1, in Omaha. Head coach Heather Cairns was an assistant coach at Creighton from 1999-2002.
