Utah State Soccer Opens Season Hosting Creighton Friday
Aug 22, 2013
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State soccer becomes the first Aggie squad to begin action when they take the field on Friday, Aug. 23 at 4 p.m. at Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field, hosting Creighton.
Friday's match will also be the first Utah State Athletics event as a member of the Mountain West Conference, as USU is in its first season in the Mountain West after eight seasons in the Western Athletic Conference.
This is the second-straight season that the Aggies and the Bluejays have met. Last season, USU and Creighton tied, 1-1, in double overtime in Omaha, Neb. Returning senior forward Jennifer Flynn scored the Aggies' lone goal of the match, which was the match-tying goal late in the second half.
USU head coach Heather Cairns will be taking on her old Bluejay squad. She was an assistant coach for Creighton from 1999-2002.
The Aggies return 17 letterwinners and eight starters from last year's team that finished 13-3-6 and captured their second-straight Western Athletic Conference Tournament title, while reaching their second NCAA Tournament in as many years.
In its only exhibition of the season, Utah State defeated Southern Utah on Aug. 17, 1-0. Junior midfielder Lexie Morgan scored the match's only goal to give the Aggies the win.
During its time in the WAC, Utah State won four league titles in the last five seasons, including WAC Tournament titles.
Last week, USU was picked tied for third in the MW Preseason Poll by the 11 league coaches. San Diego State was picked first, while New Mexico was picked second. UNLV and Utah State were tied for the third spot.
Following the match against Creighton, Utah State will host in-state rival, Utah Valley on Monday, Aug. 26 at 4 p.m. The match brings back former Aggie assistant coaches as Wolverine head coach Brent Anderson and assistant coach Alyssa Lowry were both former USU assistants under Cairns. Lowry was also a four-year lettererwinner for USU from 2005-08.
Live stats for both matches will also be available through the "GameTracker" link at www.UtahStateAggies.com, the official web site of USU Athletics. There will not be any video streaming available for these first two matches.
Admission to all home USU soccer matches at Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field is free.
