Utah State Weekly Soccer Release vs. UNLV
Aug. 28, 2000 2000 Aggie Records Overall: 0-0 Big West: 0-0 Home: 0-0 Away: 0-0 THIS WEEK - The Aggies open the 2000 regular season schedule at home against UNLV, Thursday, Aug. 31 at 4 p.m. This will be the third meeting between the two teams which each own one win a piece. The Rebels won 3-2 in the 1998 meeting, while the Aggies came out on top 2-1 in the 1999 match up. In addition, UNLV will play Iowa in Logan Saturday, Sept. 2. The game will be played at Tower Field beginning at 12 p.m. NEXT WEEK - Utah State will complete its home stand Sunday, Sept. 4 when it takes on Iowa at 11 a.m. The Aggies will then embark on a challenging road trip as they face 1999 NCAA second round qualifiers Kentucky Friday, Sept. 8 and Indiana Sunday, Sept. 10. SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS - The Rebels return nine starters and 15 letterwinners from the last year's squad that went 7-11-1. The Rebels are currently 1-1 in 2000 with a win over Cal State Fullerton (3-1) Aug. 25, and a loss to Loyola Marymount (1-0) Sunday. UNLV is led by junior Janae Sims who returns as the Rebels leading scorer from 1999 and has already scored one goal on the year in the win over Cal State Fullerton. UNLV is also under the direction of a new head coach in Dan Abdalla. Abdalla had previously been an assistant with UNLV since the program's start in 1998. AGGIE HOT SHOTS - Senior Jayme Gordy (Cheyenne, Wyo.) and sophomore Brigid Turner (Las Vegas, Nev.) picked up right where they left off after the 1999 season, each scoring their first goal of the year in Saturday's game against Dixie College. Sophomore Megan Edge (South Jordan, Utah) also turned in a goal in the second half to seal the Aggie victory over Dixie. USU VS. DIXIE GAME RECAP - Utah State's women's soccer team dominated Dixie College winning 3-1 in its second and final exhibition game of the year Saturday. The Aggies didn't wait long to make their mark in the scoring column, knocking in a goal just six minutes into the contest. Senior Jayme Gordy scored her first goal of the season off a pass from freshman Ally Clegg (Bountiful, Utah). Just two minutes later sophomore Brigid Turner booted in the Aggies second goal putting USU on top 2-0 after just eight minutes of play. Dixie spoiled a possible shutout in the second half when sophomore Amy Gustaveson scored Dixie's only goal in the 49:00. USU responded with its third and final goal when sophomore Megan Edge scored the second goal of her collegiate career off a pass from Turner.
