Aggie Soccer Returns To The Pitch Against Border-Foe Idaho State Friday
Sept. 4, 2014
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State soccer concludes its brief two-match homestand against border-foe Idaho State on Friday, Sept. 5 at Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field with kickoff beginning at 4 p.m.
The match is one day before the Utah State football team makes its home debut against Idaho State at Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 6 p.m.
Utah State is 1-2-0 after a dominating 3-0 win against Omaha in its home opener on Aug. 31. In that match, sophomore forward Jessica Brooksby led the way with a pair of goals. Senior defender Taryn Rose scored her second goal of the season to give USU the three-goal advantage.
Border foes Utah State and Idaho State are very familiar with one another. The Aggies lead the overall series, 7-5-1. USU has won the last two meeting between the teams, including a dramatic 3-2 win last season in Pocatello. Rose delivered a penalty kick in the 88th minute to give the Aggies the win. The last time that the teams met in Logan, USU had one of its most dominating wins against the Bengals, 6-1, in 2011.
This season, the Bengals are off to a hot start with a 2-0-0 record with wins over Minot State (4-2) and USU's Mountain West rival Wyoming (3-2 OT). Maria Sanchez and Amanda Ellsworth are the leading scorers on the team with three goals and one assist for seven points apiece. Idaho State has scored seven goals, while allowing only four.
There was one big difference between the Aggies' win and the two losses in the opening weekend of play. In Utah State's win against Omaha, the Aggies netted the first goal of the match. In losses to No. 23 Arkansas and Missouri State the opponent was the first to capture the lead.
Once again, admission to all Utah State soccer matches at Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field is free.
Following the match against Idaho State, the Aggies hit the road for a pair of matches in the Lone Star State. USU faces Sam Houston State on Friday, Sept. 12, while concluding the road trip at Houston on Sunday, Sept. 14. USU then returns home for a battle against Utah on Friday, Sept. 19 on Utah Youth Soccer Day. The match against the Utes is also a Utah State soccer reunion where former Aggies can come cheer on the current USU players.
