USU Soccer Opening Conference Play at San José State Friday
Utah State soccer (5-2-1, 0-0-0 MW) is set to open Mountain West action this weekend, as it plays at San José State (3-4-0, 0-0-0 MW) on Friday, Sept. 22, at 3 p.m. (MT).

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State soccer (5-2-1, 0-0-0 MW) is set to open Mountain West action this weekend, as it plays at San José State (3-4-0, 0-0-0 MW) on Friday, Sept. 22, at 3 p.m. (MT).

All Mountain West matches will continue to be broadcast as a USU Athletics Production on the Mountain West Network. All video feeds will be available live and in archive form at utahstateaggies.com/watch. Live stats and play-by-play information will be available through GameTracker, while updates will also be provided through the team’s social media outlets. Links to each option will be available online prior to every match.

San José State enters Mountain West play with a 3-4-0 record. The Spartans welcome the Aggies on a two-game win streak, posting 1-0 home victories over Cal Poly and Saint Mary’s last week. The Spartans have three players with a season-leading two goals apiece. Senior forward Dorthe Hopkins leads the offense with two goals and one assist. Sophomore Ana Calero and junior Paige Simoneau have split time in the goal through the preseason, combining for 32 saves while allowing 10 goals. The Spartans return 13 letterwinners and five starters from last season, when the team went 10-6-4 overall and 7-3-1 in league play, finishing second in the Mountain West standings. Lauren Hanson is in her fourth season at the helm of the San José State program, where she has an overall record of 28-22-11.

All-time, Utah State is 9-2-2 in competition with San José State. The two teams have met every season since 2005, since USU joined the Western Athletic Conference. The Aggies and Spartans made the move to the Mountain West at the same time in 2013. Last season, Utah State topped SJSU, 2-1, in a match in Logan.

For the Aggies, freshman midfielder Ashley Cardozo is the leading scorer, netting five goals so far this season, while senior forward Wesley Hamblin leads with four assists. Senior Sara Cobb leads the goalkeepers with 31 saves and eight goals allowed over the year, earning a 1.02 goals against average.
