Utah State Soccer to Take on In-State Rival BYU on Thursday
Oct. 1, 2008
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State soccer will look for its first win against in-state rival BYU when the Cougars come to Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. The Aggies take on the Cougars just one day before the USU football team faces BYU at Romney Stadium at 6 p.m. on Friday. BYU holds a 5-0 series advantage over Utah State. The closest match of the quintet was last season's 2-1 loss to the Cougars in Provo. This season, the Aggies are 5-6-1 after going 1-1 last week in a treacherous road trip to Cal Poly (L, 0-1) and Wyoming (W, 2-1). BYU holds a 6-5 record, including a 2-0 win over Michigan State. The Cougars are led by All-American and Hermann Trophy Candidate, Kelly Larkin. The senior returned from a wrist injury in BYU's win over Miami on Sept. 16. The Aggies have had several players involved in scoring this season. Only four players have scored at least two goals, Lauren Hansen (4), Erin Salmon (3), Shantel Flanary (2) and Lindsey Smart (2). There are no Utah State players that have more than one assist, but eight different players have earned an assist. After facing the Cougars, USU prepares for WAC play beginning on Friday, Oct., 10 at 3 p.m. at Chuck and Gloria Bell Field against Idaho. The Aggies are 3-0 in WAC openers. This is the second-straight season that the Aggies have started WAC play with the Vandals. Last season, Utah State defeated Idaho, 4-0. In 2005 and 2006, the Aggies defeated Louisiana Tech to begin conference play. In 2005 Utah State won 2-1 in Logan, while the Aggies won 2-0 in 2006 in Ruston Live stats will be available for the match against BYU through the women's soccer page on www.utahstateaggies.com, by clicking on GameTracker in the current events box.
