ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - - Utah State soccer returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 7 in the semifinals of the Mountain West Soccer Tournament against top-seeded San Diego State at UNM Soccer Complex. This will be the Aggies third match in four days, while the Aztecs will be in action for the first time.

Utah State (10-6-5) earned a first-round win against eighth-seeded Nevada, 2-0, on Nov. 4. USU used timely goals from junior forward Ambryn McCallson and senior forward Mari Miyashiro. The Aggies came back strong on Wednesday, Nov. 5 to take on fourth-seed and host New Mexico. The two teams battled to a 0-0 double overtime tie before the match went to penalty kicks.

This was Utah State's first-ever match that went to penalty kicks. Senior forward Jennifer Flynn started the Aggies in the right direction drilling the first PK past UNM goalkeeper Cassie Ulrich. UNM's Elba Holguin tied the PK score, 1-1 with a make. Freshman midfielder Jayne Robison missed the second, while Dylann O'Connor gave the Lobos the lead with make, 2-1. Sophomore midfielder Jamie Duke took the third for the Aggies with a make, which was her first action of the match to tie it 2-2. Redshirt-freshman Natalie Stoven then put an end to it with stops against Lindsey Guice and Alexis Leyba. Sophomore defender Sarah Lorscheider put the Aggies up 3-2, while McCallson once again delivered to seal the win. McCallson also scored the game-winning goal in the Aggies first round win against Nevada.

 

 

In the other second round match, third-seeded Boise State shut down sixth-seeded Wyoming, 3-0. The Broncos will now face second-seeded Fresno State on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 4 p.m.

Utah State has now advanced to the semifinals of a conference tournament for eight-straight seasons.

San Diego State is 11-6-2 overall and 9-1-0 in league play to earn the tournament's top seed, as well as the defending tournament champions. The Aztecs have won five-straight matches, including a 2-0 win over Utah State in Logan on Oct. 27. SDSU's Haley Palmer scored both goals in the match for the Aztecs. Hannah Keane is second in the league in scoring with 24 points. Palmer earned MW Defensive Player of the Year honors.

With back-to-back shutouts, Stoven has lowered her goals against average to 0.40. Overall, Utah State has an overall 0.86 GAA. The Aggies have 10 shutouts this season which is tied for second with the 2012 team for the second-most in school history. The 2011 team had a school-record 11 shutouts.
