Utah State Soccer Earns NSCAA College Team Academic Award For 11th-Straight Season
Dec. 9, 2013
LOGAN, Utah - Head coach Heather Cairns and the Utah State soccer team earned the National Soccer Coaches of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award after posting a 3.29 grade point average. This is the 11th-straight year that USU has been honored with the NSCAA award.
The Aggies were one of seven Mountain West Conference squads to be recognized along with Air Force, Fresno State, New Mexico, San Diego State, San Jose State, UNLV and Wyoming. Only UNLV (3.46) had a better team GPA in the conference. The Aggies were one of four teams from the Beehive state to be honored along with Dixie State, Utah and BYU. Cairns' squads have earned the NSCAA Team Award each of the 11 seasons that she has been at the helm of the Utah State program.
A total of 862 soccer teams (269 men, 593 women) posted a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher, thereby earning the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the 2012-13 academic year. There were 182 schools that had both their men's and women's teams honored.
The Aggies advanced to the semifinals of the Mountain West Tournament before ultimately losing to eventual champion, San Diego State, 3-2, in Albuquerque, N.M., on Nov. 7. Utah State captured its first-ever MW Tournament victory with a 2-0 shutout over Nevada. The Aggies ended the season with a 10-7-5 record.
