Feb. 13, 2009
SAN DIEGO - Senior Lindsey Benson allowed only two hits in eight innings as the Aggies fell, 3-1, to No. 24-ranked and host San Diego State in day one of the Campbell-Cartier Softball Tournament in San Diego, Calif. With the loss the Aggies fall to 2-4, while the Aztecs improve to 3-2 with the win.
The game was a pitchers duel between Benson and San Diego State freshman Bailey Micetich. Neither pitcher allowed a run until the eighth inning. The Aztecs got the first hit of the game in the third inning when Jen Wisneski singled to left field. It was the only hit in the game until the eighth inning. The Aggies were no-hit by Micetich until the extra frame.
In the top of the eighth, pinch hitter Traci Wolf walked to lead off the inning. With one out, Taryin Casillas followed with the fifth walk of the game. A Brittany Knudsen sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third. Erin Floros was intentionally walked to set the table for Tonye McCorkle. McCorkle drilled a triple to right field to empty the bases and give San Diego State a 3-0 lead.
The Aggies fought back in the bottom of the eighth when freshman Jasmine Harris hit a home run to center field. It was the second home run of the year for Harris. Nicole Rupp would single down the right field line to extend the inning, but freshman Rayna Bradshaw would strike out to end the game.
Utah State is now 0-2 against ranked teams after losing to No. 12 Tennessee last week. USU is not done playing ranked teams as the Aggies will also take on No. 8 Stanford, No. 10 Washington and No. 24 Long Beach State which are all ranked in the top 25.
