Aggie Softball Ends Texas Invitational With A Heartbreaking, 2-1, Loss to Lamar Sunday
Feb. 24, 2013
AUSTIN, Texas -- - Utah State softball finished up play in the Texas Invitational on Sunday with a re-match with Southland Conference opponent Lamar. The Cardinals rallied late to top USU, 2-1, in a game that highlighted pitching and defense.
The Aggies scored the first run of the game in the top of the fifth frame as junior outfielder Rachael Hunsaker delivered a hard hit ball down the rightfield line for a triple that allowed sophomore outfielder Amburlyn Orozco to score from second. Hunsaker's triple was the first of the season for a Utah State player.
Hunsaker ended the game 2-for-3 at the plate. Junior infielder Becca Walker added another extra base hit with a double for the Aggie offense.
The Lamar offense had an answer to USU's solo run in the bottom half of the fifth inning. The Cardinals were able to score two runs on three hits to claim their first lead of the ball game. Their two runs proved to be enough, holding on for the 2-1 come-from-behind win.
Utah State starting pitcher Mandy Harmon put together another strong outing, going five innings and allowing only two earned runs from the circle on Sunday, but was credited with her 10th loss of the season. Harmon is 0-10 on the year, while the squad falls to 0-15.
USU will next see action in the San Diego Classic, as it will play five games in the weekend tournament. The Aggies will open action in the tournament with a bout against future Mountain West Conference foe New Mexico on March 1.
