CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -
Utah State softball concluded its weekend of competition in a big way Sunday, posting a 15-0 five-inning no-hit win over tournament host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Freshman pitcher Delaney Hull threw the complete game Sunday, throwing the first no-hitter of her collegiate career. This is the first no-hitter by a Utah State pitcher since at least 2002. Hull matched her career-high with five strikeouts against the Islanders.
Junior first baseman Bailee Trapp and senior third baseman Amee Aarhus led the Aggies at the plate, as both went 3-for-4 in the game. Trapp hit a double and a home run, bringing in a career-high six RBIs. In all, the Aggies had seven extra-base hits in the win, with four doubles, a triple and two home runs. Trapp and senior catcher Brina Buttacavoli were tops defensively with five putouts apiece.
With the win, Utah State improves to 7-7 on the season.
Utah State got the scoring started early Sunday, plating two runs with two outs in the top of the first. Aarhus got the first hit of the day with a triple to right field. Junior designated player Bailey Lewis drew a walk, while Buttacavoli brought in the first run with a single to center field. Sophomore outfielder Riley Plogger then brought Lewis home with a single.
The second inning was the biggest of the day, with seven runs coming across for the Aggies. Freshman second baseman Stephanie Reed led-off with a double. Back-to-back singles from Trapp and senior outfielder Jazmin Clarke combined with an Islander error brought two runners in. After one out, the Aggies hit another two singles, giving Buttacvaoli two runners on when she hit a home run to center field. Plogger then doubled to left field, while freshman shortstop Joely Williamson walked. Back through the order, Reed reached base on a TA&M-CC error, loading the bases. A fielder's choice from Trapp then brought Plogger home before the inning ended on a flyout.
The Aggies added two hits in the top of the third, but didn't score again until the fourth. Reed singled up the middle, while Trapp followed with her home run. Freshman Kayla Fielder came in as a pinch hitter then, hitting the first double of her career, but she was left stranded.
Utah State wasn't done yet, as it added four last runs in the top of the fifth, all with two outs on the board. Senior outfielder Emily Hunter reached first on an error, advancing to second on the play. Willimason then drew a walk, while Reed loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. Trapp then hit a double to right field, bringing all three runners home. Fielder followed with a single to right field to score Trapp before the inning ended with a groundout.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi got its sole base runners of the game in the bottom of the fifth, as the batter reached base on a USU error. A fielder's choice came on the next at-bat, but a fly ball to center field ended the game.
Utah State tallied 17 hits in the game Sunday, recording double-digit hits for the fifth-straight game.
Utah State will have next weekend free from competition. The non-conference season will continue the following weekend, beginning with a single game at Pacific on Wednesday, March 7. USU will then play in the Aggie Invitational, hosted by UC Davis, March 8-10.
