Freshmen Provide Offense as Aggie Softball Falls to San Diego, 2-0, at the Highlander Classic Saturday

Riverside, Calif. - A pair of freshmen added the offense as the Utah State softball team lost to San Diego, 2-0, in day two of the Highlander Classic hosted by UC Riverside on Saturday.

With the loss, the Aggies fall to 5-6 this season and have lost three-straight games. San Diego improves to 5-10 with the win.

It was a pitcher's duel from the beginning with San Diego's Cassidy Coleman against USU's sophomore sensation Noelle Johnson. Coleman struck out 10 Aggies, while Johnson got three strikes on three Toreros.

In the top of the first inning, Utah State tried to get on the board first with a one-out walk by junior shortstop Jolene Koons. Freshman third baseman Victoria Saucedo followed with a single to left that advanced Koons to second. Coleman was able to induce a double play to end the threat.

Saucedo is now leading the team in hitting with a .406 batting average. She also leads the team in hits with 13 and runs scored with 11.

San Diego scored the only runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning with a two-out rally. Dana Prelsnik got things started with a single to left, while Chloe Kaneko followed with a single up the middle to put runners on first and second. Mary Grabowski and Olivia Sandusky provided RBI singles to give the Toreros the 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning, freshman first baseman Paxton Provost led off the inning with a single to right centerfield. Coleman was able to shut down the Aggies and prevent the score from changing.

USU will conclude the tournament on Sunday, taking on host UC Riverside against on Sunday, March 9 at 12:30 p.m. (MT). The Highlanders defeated the Aggies on Friday, 5-2.
