Utah State softball opened play at the UC Davis-hosted Aggie Invitational Thursday, posting a 2-0 win against the home Aggies. Freshman Delaney Hull pitched the complete game, matching her career high with five strikeouts and walking two batters. Senior outfielder Jazmin Clarke was the top batter for the Aggies, going 2-for-4 on the day, including a triple. Utah State improved to 9-7 on the season, picking up its fourth-straight win and third-straight shutout. UC Davis fell to 12-8 with the loss. UC Davis had the first hit of the day in the bottom of the first, but Utah State quickly added one of its own in the second inning. Both teams were retired in order in the third, including Hull's first strikeout of the game. Clarke led off the fourth inning with a triple to right-center. She then scored on a sac fly from freshman second baseman Stephanie Reed. The Aggies got one more runner on via a walk, but a foul out left her stranded. In the bottom half of the inning, UC Davis had three base runners with a single and a pair of fielder's choice plays, but no runner made it past third. Utah State added three more hits over the next two innings, but would not score again until the top of the seventh. The Aggies took advantage of three UC Davis errors to extend their lead. Junior first baseman Bailee Trapp reached base on an error at third. Freshman Kayla Fielder entered as a pinch runner and made it to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Clarke singled to left, advancing as far as third on a throwing error and driving Fielder home. In the final half-inning, UC Davis got one runner on with a Utah State error, but the Aggies retired the next three batters to end the game. In all, Utah State out-hit UC Davis, 6-2. The host Aggies had three errors in the game, while USU had two. Action continues at the Aggie Invitational on Friday, when USU plays a doubleheader against Valparaiso and Northern Colorado at noon and 2:15 p.m., respectively. The weekend will end with a pair of games on Saturday against Northern Colorado at 10 a.m. and UC Davis at noon.
