Vance Home Run Leads Aggies To Win Against St. Mary's

RENO, Nev. - Utah State's Haven Vance led off the sixth inning with a solo home run to lead Utah State's softball team to a 2-0 victory against St. Mary's on the final day of the Nevada Tournament here Sunday.
The Aggies' softball team closed the three-day Nevada Tournament with a split defeating St. Mary's 2-0 and losing to Nevada 11-1 on the final day USU finished the tournament with a 2-4 record, going 2-1 against St. Mary's and 0-3 against host Nevada.
Vance broke open a scoreless game with her solo shot in the Aggies' last at bat. The Aggies then added an insurance run later in the inning on Candice Hatch's sacrifice fly to centerfield which scored Lauren Guzman.
Leslie Higley pitched USU to the win, throwing a one-hitter and walking just two while going the distance.
USU capped the tournament with an 11-1 loss to Nevada. The Wolfpack broke the game open early scoring three runs in the first and sixth in the second en route to the victory.
USU pounded out seven hits, but committed three errors, while allowing eight Nevada hits. Guzman and Hatch each went two of two at the plate, but USU scored just one run in the third inning as Vance doubled to lead off the inning and was advanced home by a Hatch single.
USU will play a doubleheader at Southern Utah on Tuesday.
