Softball Upsets 19th-Ranked Oregon In First Game Of Doubleheader

EUGENE,Ore. - Haven Vance was two-for-five with a homerun and four RBIs as Utah State's softball team upset 19th-ranked Oregon, 5-4 in nine innings, in the opening game of its doubleheader here Saturday. The Aggies then dropped the second game, 2-0, as they were no-hit for the second time this season.
In the first game, Utah State managed a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning when center fielder Casey Smith drove in catcher Candice Hatch, who led off the inning with a single. Vance then drove in Smith and Sara Fleming with a line drive through the middle.
Oregon answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when Kristi Leiter drove in Kayleen Hudson with a single to right field. The Ducks pulled within a run after an RBI double off the right field fence by Breanne Sabol in the fifth inning.
Oregon's Leiter hit her second double of the game to deep right center field to drive in Jenn Poore for the tying run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Haven Vance hit a two-run homerun to right field in the top of the ninth inning that proved to be the difference in the Aggies picking up the win.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Oregon's Ani Hyhus pitched the 14th no-hitter in Oregon history and struck out a single-game record 16 batters to lead the Ducks to a 2-0 victory.
The Ducks had five hits in the game, including a double each by Leiter, Suzie Barnes and Poor. Leiter finished the two games five-for-six with three doubles and two RBIs.
The Aggies, now 4-19 on the season, travel to Oregon State Sunday to play the Beavers in a doubleheader which starts at 2 p.m..
