Aggie Softball Loses Heartbreaker to Louisiana Tech in WAC Opener Friday

RUSTON, La. - Despite taking an early 4-0 lead, the Utah State softball team dropped its Western Athletic Conference opener to Louisiana Tech, 6-4, in Ruston on Friday. Kallan Thompson delivered a two-out, three-run walk off home run to lead the Lady Techsters over the Aggies.
With the loss, Utah State falls to 11-12 with the loss, 0-1 in WAC play. Louisiana Tech is now 13-9 overall and 1-0 win league play. The Aggies are now 0-5 in WAC openers.
Senior Kate Greenough pitched six inning for the Aggies, tying a season-high with six strikeouts. Freshman Shelbi Tyteca took the loss, allowing three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tyteca is now 1-1 this season.
Utah State wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Senior Rachel Evans began the inning with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch by Louisiana Tech starting pitcher Meghan Krieg. Evans scored the first run of the game on error by LTU right fielder Kendra Harmon that put senior Emily Reilly at first. Reilly made the game 2-0, scoring when senior Nicole Rupp-Tindall ripped a triple to right field for her second triple of the season. Tindall crossed the plate on a single to right by freshman Kali Cancelosi to give the Aggies the early 3-0 lead.
The Aggies added another run in the top of the second inning. With one out, freshman Tina Ferguson reached on a walk. Ferguson moved to second on an infield single by Evans who reached base four times in the game. Reilly then flied out to right field. Ferguson tagged and moved to third. Louisiana Tech third baseman, Molly Goza, made a throwing error allowing Ferguson to score.
Utah State threatened in the top of the fourth but were not able to score. Junior Megan McDonald lead off the inning with an infield single. With one out, Ferguson moved McDonald to second with a single to left field. Rachel Evans followed with a single, but McDonald was thrown out at home to give Louisiana Tech two outs. The Aggies would load the bases when Reilly was hit by a pitch. The senior would have to come out of the game after getting hit in the face. Krieg would get out of the bases loaded jam by striking out Tindall.
The Lady Techsters threatened in the bottom of the fifth inning. Heather Doiron opened the inning with a single to center. A fielder's choice by Sarah Offut eliminated Doiron from the base paths. An error by first baseman Shelbi Tyteca put runners on first and second. Greenough was able to get the final two outs of the inning to stop the threat.
Louisiana Tech came roaring back in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the lead down to 4-3. The Lady Techsters used three doubles and an error to get back into the game. Two runs scored after the double by Doiron.
The Lady Techsters completed the comeback with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning with the three run shot off the bat of Kallan Thompson. Relief pitcher Shelbi Tyteca got the first two batters of the inning. Waits and Kirby both walked prior to the home run by Thompson to end the game.
Utah State concludes the series with the Lady Techsters on Saturday, March 27 with a doubleheader beginning at Noon (MT).
