LOGAN, Utah - Haven Vance recorded the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh inning of the first game and Candice Hatch slapped in the game winner in the bottom of the seventh of the second game as Utah State swept its conference opening double-header with three-time defending Big West Champion Cal State Fullerton here today. The Aggies won the first game 4-3 and the second game 6-5. USU was 0-3 against the Titans last season.

With the win, the Aggies improve to 6-22 overall and 2-0 in league play, while Fullerton fell to 11-22 overall and 0-2 in Big West play.

Casey Smith opened things up for the Aggies in the first games, as she hit a double to right center field in the bottom of the fifth inning. Smith then advanced to third when Kelly Leos fouled out deep down the right field line to the second baseman. Hatch was then hit by a pitch and stole second base to give the Aggies runners at second and third. With two out in the inning, Vance slapped a double to left center that scored both Smith and Hatch. Michell Vlahos then capped off the inning with a triple to center field that scored Vance from second.

The Titans then responded with three runs of their own in the top of the sixth. The Titans started the inning with two doubles that scored a run as they closed within two runs of USU. The Aggies got one out before giving up another run on a double by Jody Campbell. Fullerton then tallied what proved to be its final run of the game, as Jenna Wheeler doubled to left center to score Campbell.

With the score knotted at three in the bottom of the seventh, Amanda Carlson singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. With Carlson on first, Vance knocked the game-winning double to right center field to propel the Aggies to the 4-3 triumph.

Vance finished the game going two-for-four with three RBIs. Jill Bruins, who came in to relieve Leslie Higley to start the seventh inning, picked up her first win of the season.

In the second game, USU fell behind early as Fullerton scored in the top of the first inning.

The Aggies then took the lead in the bottom of the third with two runs of their own. Haven Vance notched her fourth RBI of the day as she doubled in Carlson, who had walked to open the inning. Vance then advanced to third as Vlahos put down a sacrifice bunt. Vance then gave the Aggies the 2-1 lead as she scored on a wild pitch.

The Titans would then grab the lead again in the top of the fourth with two runs, but the Aggies came right back in the bottom of the inning with a run of their own to knot the score at four apiece. Carlson hit a double that scored Lauren Guzman from second, who was pinch running for Kelly Leos.

USU took the 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, before Fullerton responded with two runs of its own to take a 5-4 lead into the seventh inning.

USU would then carry its seventh inning heroics from the first game over to the second. Fleming got things started for the Aggies with a walk to open the inning. Tayler Chapin would then pinch run for Fleming. Casey Smith reached on a fielder's choice and Kelly Leos then reached on an error by Fullerton's second baseman that scored Chapin from third.
