Utah Valley's Late Rally Pushes Wolverines Past Aggies, 3-2, On Tuesday
April 16, 2013
LOGAN, Utah - Utah Valley rallied to score the game winning run in the top of the seventh inning to sink Utah State, 3-2 on Tuesday. Krystin Jachim delivered a bases-loaded single to score the game winning run for UVU and in doing so dropping USU to 8-34 overall this season.
The Wolverines responded with two runs in the top of third inning to claim a 2-1 lead over the home team as Kylee Brinkerhoff drove a ball into the wind to deep right-center field that resulted in a triple, scoring a runner from first. Utah Valley added another run in the inning as Utah State failed to cleanly field a ball hit down the third base line, allowing Brinkerhoff to score from third.
USU responded in similar fashion in the bottom of the third, as senior infielder Christine Thomsen came up with a two-out single which was promptly followed by a triple to right field by sophomore outfielder Hailey Froton, that scored Thomsen from first. It was Froton's fourth triple of the season.
With the score knotted at two apiece, neither team managed to create much of a scoring chance in the next three innings as pitching and defense took over for both squads.
It was not until the top of the seventh inning when Jachim was able to break through for Utah Valley and foil the Aggies opening game of a seven-game homestand in LaRee and LeGrand Johnson Field.
Freshman pitcher Noelle Johnson entered the game in the fifth inning, in relief of starting senior pitcher Mandy Harmon. Johnson was tagged with the loss and is now 3-12 this season, while her squad falls to 8-34 on the year.
