SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
Despite taking the lead into the final half-inning of the game, Utah State softball closed its 2018 season in a 4-3 loss at San Diego State, Saturday.
Senior Jordyn McCracken pitched the complete game for Utah State, throwing her fifth complete game of the season. Senior outfielder Jazmin Clarke led the Aggie offense, as she went 3-for-4 at the plate, including two doubles. Senior catcher Brina Buttacavoli highlighted the day with a home run, her second of the series.
With three RBIs on the day, Buttacavoli finishes the season with 44 RBIs, which ties for second on the USU single-season record list. Clarke scored the Aggies' first run of the day, giving her 100 runs in her four years to rank third on the career record list.
Utah State ends the season with a 18-34 record, going 7-17 in Mountain West play. San Diego State closes its year with a 20-31 overall record, including an 11-13 ledger in conference play.
Utah State took the early lead Saturday, scoring a run in the top of the first. The Aggies made quick work of the inning as the first three batters faced a combined four pitches. Clarke led off with a single on the first pitch of the game, moving to second on a one-pitch sac bunt from freshman outfielder Leah Molina. Sophomore outfielder Riley Plogger then added a single to the right field gap, putting runners on the corners for Buttacavoli. After an 11-pitch at-bat, Buttacavoli reached base on a San Diego State error and driving in a run, while a second error allowed her to advance to second.
The Aggie lead lasted until the bottom of the third, where San Diego State opened the inning with a pair of walks. Clarke recorded a pair of outs in center field, but a double down the right side brought the two runners home, putting the Aztecs up, 2-1.
Utah State had a least one hit in each inning, but was not able to capitalize on them until the top of the sixth. Plogger opened the inning with a single to center field, when Buttacavoli came up with her 11th home run of the season to score both and put the lead back in the Aggies' favor.
After going three innings without a hit, San Diego State opened the bottom of the seventh with a single. A fielder's choice followed, but both runners stayed on base due to a Utah State error. A second error proved costly on the next at-bat, bringing a run across for the Aztecs to tie the game. Without any outs on the board, another single fell for San Diego State, bringing the winning run home.
Utah State had seven hits to San Diego State's five, while both teams had two errors in the game.
