FRESNO, Calif. - Fifth-seeded Utah State softball saw the 2011 season come to an end with a 4-1 loss to sixth-seeded Louisiana Tech in an elimination game at the Western Athletic Conference Softball Tournament at Bulldog Diamond in Fresno, Calif.
Utah State ends the season 15-42, while Louisiana Tech continues the tournament with a 17-38 record. The Lady Techsters will face host and third-seeded Fresno State tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. (PT). Earlier today, fourth-seeded Hawai`i was the first team eliminated from the tournament.
Despite pitching over 200 pitches against second-seeded Boise State earlier today, Megan Krieg was in the circle once again for the Lady Techsters.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Lady Techsters were able to get baseunners on with a hit and an error, but starting pitcher sophomore Shelbi Tyteca was able to get out of the jam with no damage done.
Utah State was able to get one hit in both the first and second innings. In the first, freshman second baseman Kassy Uchida single past the shortstop. In the second, freshman Allison Lenzora single to left center. Both Uchida and Lenzora were named to the second-team all-WAC squad earlier this week.
In the bottom of the third inning, Janna Frandrup singled to left center with one out to start a rally for the Lady Techsters. She moved to second another single to left center by Allie Geisler, who had five hits in the loss to Boise State earlier today. Tyteca was able to escape the inning by getting Meghan Knowles to ground into a double play.
Through the first four innings, the Aggies were able to get at least one hit an inning, but were not able to score, leaving four on.
Louisiana Tech broke through with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Heather Doiron started the inning with an infield single. She moved to second on a walk by Molly Goza. An error by first baseman Kelley Kaneshiro allowed Doiron to score the first run of the game, as LTU took a 1-0 lead. The second run crossed the plate on a foul ball fly out by pinch hitter Erin Kipp. The third and final run of the inning scored on single by pinch hitter Cassie Krieg.
The Lady Techsters added one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a fielder's choice by Goza, and a run scoring triple by Katelynn Hill to put Louisiana Tech up 4-0.
The Aggies got one run back in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, senior outfielder Joreigh Landers single to right center. She would scored from first base on Kaneshiro's second double of the game to cut the lead to 4-1.
Utah State is still looking for its first win in the WAC Tournament with an 0-6 record. USU is now 0-2 against LTU in the WAC Tournament. In 2007 in Fresno, Louisiana Tech defeated Utah State 8-1.
