Utah State Softball Team To Begin Spring Practice Monday

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State softball team begins its preparation for the 2012 season as it holds its first team practice on Monday, Jan. 9. USU head coach Carissa Millsap-Kalaba enters her third season at the helm of the softball program and will look to build from last year's 15-42 season. Kalaba has brought in two new assistant coaches, Jessica Pistole and Holly Pearce to complete the coaching roster.
The Aggies return two second team all-WAC performers, sophomore infielder Allison Lenzora and sophomore utility player Kassy Uchida who were the two leading bats-women from last year. Lenzora led the team with a .356 batting average and Uchida was second with a .346 average. Also returning for Utah State is the all time home run leader, Kelley Kanershiro, who broke the all-time home run record last season. Kanershiro hit 10 longballs last season and has 32 total home runs in her career with USU.
The Aggies have nine newcomers, Christen Thomsen, a transfer from Colorado State, and the rest are incoming freshman, Nicole Arata, Hailey Fronton, Jolene Koons, Dekota Monarrez, Mariah Peterson, Amburlyn Orozco, Taylor Serda and Bailee Tyteca. Utah State will look to the newcomers to provide a spark and enthusiasm to the young USU squad.
The Aggies will open its season in the University of Georgia Softball Tournament on Feb. 10, 2012 against South Eastern Conference foe North Carolina State at 9 a.m. (MT)
