Softball Tabbed Eighth in Big West Coaches' Preseason Poll
Jan. 26, 2005
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State softball was picked to finish eighth in the 2005 Big West Conference race in a vote of the league's eight coaches Wednesday.
Long Beach State, which won last year's conference title, was tabbed to repeat and win the league again this season. The 49ers received five of the eight possible first-place votes and 59 points overall. Cal State Northridge was chosen second, with 48 points and two first-place votes. Pacific and UC Santa Barbara were selected third and fourth, respectively. The Gauchos garnered the final first-place vote. Cal State Fullerton, Cal Poly, UC Riverside, and Utah State rounded out the poll.
"Being picked to finish last is great, we will surprise every team that way," Utah State head coach Lonny Sargent said. "Obviously we are shown no respect by the conference, so hopefully we will be able to go into the season and prove people wrong."
Last year, Utah State was 10-41 overall and 6-15 in the Big West. Utah State softball opens its season Feb. 4-6 at the Alexis Resort Kick-off Tournament hosted by UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev. The Aggies' home opener is slated for March 16 against Southern Utah.
