LOGAN, Utah - In its inaugural season Mountain West, Utah State softball was picked ninth in the MW Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league's nine coaches and announced by the conference office on Tuesday. The Aggies garnered 11 total points.

Two-time defending Mountain West champion San Diego State was picked to win the 2014 title. The Aztecs collected seven first-place votes and 63 total points. Fresno State was second with 56 points and the remaining two first-place votes.

Boise State is third with 42 points, followed by Colorado State and MW newcomer, San José State, tied for the fourth spot with 38 points apiece. Nevada is sixth with 36 points, with UNLV (27), New Mexico (13) and MW newcomer, Utah State (11), rounding out the standings.

Utah State brings back 14 letterwinners and eight starters from last year's squad that ended its final season in the Western Athletic Conference with an 11-43 overall record and a 5-15 WAC mark. The Aggies are now under the direction of Steve Johnson, who begins his first season as USU head coach.

Junior outfielder Hailey Froton is the Aggies' top returner, earning second-team all-WAC honors in 2013. Froton ended the 2013 season hitting .304 and is the only returning Aggie who hit over .300 last season. In the circle, USU is led by sophomore pitcher Noelle Johnson, who is one of the USU captains. Johnson led the team with 127 strikeouts last season.

The Aggies will start their spring season on Thursday, Feb. 6. at the BYU-hosted Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah. USU begins action against Southern Utah on Feb. 6 at 2 p.m., and concludes the day against border-foe Idaho State at 4 p.m. The Aggies and the Bengals meet three times this season in three different states, as USU will also face ISU in California and in Idaho.
