Noelle Johnson Named America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week

LOGAN, Utah - Sophomore pitcher Noelle Johnson has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, Feb. 10 it was announced Monday, in an award that is voted on by a state-wide media panel.

This is the first USU Athlete of the Week honor for Johnson.

Johnson (Santee, Calif.) helped Utah State to a 4-2 record at the Southern Utah hosted Red Desert Classic last weekend as USU posted wins against Southern Utah (8-0), East Carolina (12-3), UT Arlington (5-0) and Nebraska-Omaha (6-0), and lost to Idaho State (10-7) and Grand Canyon (5-3). Johnson's best game of the tournament was in the finale against UNO as she set a USU school record with 16 strikeouts in a two-hit shutout win over seven innings. Johnson started the tournament with a two-hit, five-inning shutout win against the Thunderbirds, before allowing seven earned runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings in taking the loss against the Bengals. She then allowed one earned run on four hits in 5.0 innings of no decision work against the Lopes. Against the Pirates, she allowed two earned runs on five hits, while striking out six in five innings for the win. She then picked up her first save of the season against the UTA Mavericks as she pitched 4.0 innings and allowing just one hit, while striking out five batters.

For the tournament, Johnson posted a 3-1 record to go along with one save as she struck out 40 batters, while allowing 22 hits and 10 earned runs over 29.1 innings for a 2.39 earned run average.

The Aggies will be back in action on Feb. 28 at the San Diego Classic I. Utah State will take on San Diego at 5:30 p.m. and Grand Canyon at 8 p.m., to open the three-day tournament.

Nominees from other sports for USU Student-Athlete of the Week Included:
Senior center Jarred Shaw (Dallas, Texas) posted a pair of double-doubles in helping lead Utah State to two Mountain West home wins last week with an 83-75 victory against Nevada and a 76-70 win against Boise State. Against the Wolf Pack, Shaw netted 17 points as he was 7-of-12 from the field and 3-for-4 at the free throw line, as well as tying season-highs of 13 rebounds and three blocked shots, while adding two assists. Against the Broncos, Shaw also tallied 17 points, netting 7-of-16 field goals and 3-of-6 free throws, along with pulling down 10 rebounds to go with two blocks and one steal. For the week, Shaw averaged 17.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, 1.0 assists and 0.5 steals per game, while shooting 50.0 percent from the field (14-28) and 60.0 percent at the free throw line (6-10).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - Junior guard Elise Nelson (Springfield, Ore.) averaged 7.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.5 steals last week as Utah State lost a pair of Mountain West road games at Nevada (70-66) and at Boise State (83-63). Against the Wolf Pack, Nelson scored four points to go along with three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Against the Broncos, Nelson had her second career double-double with 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds as she was 5-of-9 from the field and 1-for-1 beyond the arc, to go along with five assists and two steals. For the week, Nelson shot 46.7 percent from the field (7-15).

GYMNASTICS - Junior Sarah Landes (Edmond, Okla.) finished second in the all-around at BYU last weekend as Utah State lost a dual meet to the Cougars, 194.900-194.350. Against the Cougars, Landes recorded a season-best 39.175 in the all-around as she tied for fourth on vault with a 9.800, tied for first on bars with a 9.825, tied for third on beam with a 9.775, and finished seventh on floor with a 9.775.

MEN'S TENNIS - Senior Fredrik Peterson (Bastad, Sweden) posted a 1-1 singles record and a 1-0 doubles record last week as Utah State notched a 1-1 dual record with a 5-2 home win against Seattle and a 7-0 loss at Utah. Against the Redhawks, Peterson recorded a straight sets win at No. 3 singles (6-3, 6-5) and teamed with junior Sean Levesque for a 6-4 win at the third doubles position. Against the Utes, Petersen lost in straight sets at No. 2 singles.

WOMEN'S TENNIS - Junior McKenzie Davis (Salt Lake City, Utah) won both of her matches last week in helping Utah State to a 6-1 win at Idaho State. Against the Bengals, Davis posted a straight sets win at No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-0) and teamed with sophomore Kallie Sperry for a 6-2 win at the first doubles position.

MEN'S TRACK & FIELD - Junior Nic Bowens (Meridian, Idaho) won both the 60m (6.72) and 200m (21.33) at the Boise State hosted Bronco Invitational last weekend.

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD - Junior Rachel Orr (Thatcher, Ariz.) won the high jump (1.70m/5-07.00) at the Boise State hosted Bronco Invitational last weekend.
