Aggie Softball Season Continues at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Utah State softball (3-6) continues preseason play in a tournament hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this weekend. The slate of games will open with a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 23, with games against the host-Islanders (4-6) and Omaha (5-5) at 9 a.m. (MT) and 11:30 a.m., respectively.

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State softball (3-6) continues preseason play in a tournament hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this weekend. The slate of games will open with a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 23, with games against the host-Islanders (4-6) and Omaha (5-5) at 9 a.m. (MT) and 11:30 a.m., respectively.

USU will open Saturday's action against Texas Southern (1-1) at 9:45 a.m., followed by a rematch against TA&M-CC at 2:15 p.m. The weekend will conclude with a second game against Texas Southern on Sunday, Feb. 25, at 8 a.m.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi welcomes three teams to its campus for a weekend of games. Utah State, Omaha, Texas Southern and the Islanders will each play five games against the various opponents. A video stream and live stats will both be available for each game. Links to each option will be posted on the Utah State softball social media pages prior to the contest. Social media updates will also be provided during all five games.

Tickets to this weekend’s games are sold on a game-by-game basis and are $5 in advance or $8 on the day of competition. Youth, seniors and military tickets receive a $1 discount. Tickets can be purchased at the TA&M-CC ticket office, over the phone, or at Chapman Field before the game.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi enters the weekend with a 4-6 record, coming off a doubleheader split against Prairie View A&M. As a team, the Islanders are batting .246, led by junior outfielder Kayla Sheridan, who is hitting .444 on the season. Four pitchers have seen time on the mound for TA&M-CC, posting a combined 3.76 ERA. The Islanders returned just two players to the roster this season, after going 12-36 a year ago, bringing 12 newcomers aboard this season. Blake Miller is in his second season as the head coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, where he has an overall record of 16-42. This weekend will mark the first-ever games between the Aggies and Islanders.

Omaha has started its season with a 5-5 record, coming off a 2-3 weekend at the Lion Classic II, hosted by Southeastern Louisiana. Overall, the Mavericks are batting .211 on the year, with two players leading the way with a .318 average each. Omaha has utilized four pitchers, who have an overall ERA of 4.56. The Mavericks welcomed back five starters and one additional letterwinner after going 15-30 last season. DJ Sanchez is in her second season at the helm of the Omaha program, posting an overall record of 20-35. All-time, Utah State is 2-0 against Omaha.

 

 

Texas Southern has played just two games this season, splitting a doubleheader at Houston Baptist last week. In those games, the Tigers hit .224, led by senior infielder Jocilynn Ellis who went 4-for-6 on the day. Four pitchers split the work against HBU, posting a 2.05 ERA. Texas Southern retuned eight starters and 11 total letterwinners to the field this season, after posting a 25-21 record a year ago. Worley Barker is in his 13th season as the head coach of the TSU program, where he has a 267-303 record.

For the Aggies, freshman outfielder Leah Molina is batting a team-high .526 (16-of-31), while the team is leading the Mountain West with a .311 overall batting average. In the circle, freshman Delaney Hull has a team-low ERA of 2.92, while the four pitchers combined have allowed 81 hits and 55 runs.
