Utah State Softball Begins Play at the San Diego Classic I Friday

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State softball returns to action after a two-week break from tournament play. The Aggies travel to San Diego for the San Diego Classic I February 28-March 2 hosted by both San Diego State and San Diego.

Utah State is currently 4-2 after a successful start to the Steve Johnson era.

The Aggies will begin the tournament at San Diego on Friday, Feb. 28 at 5:30 p.m. (MT). USU will take on Grand Canyon for the second time this season on Friday at 8 p.m. (MT). On Saturday, Utah State will take on Lehigh at 10 a.m. (MT), while concluding action against Mississippi at 5:30 p.m. (MT). On Sunday, the Aggies finish the San Diego Classic I against Illinois-Chicago at 11 a.m. (MT).

USU looks to keep the momentum it started at the Red Desert Classic in St. George. Offensively, the Aggies were led by Jolene Koons who hit .538 in six games. Freshman Victoria Saucedo hit .438 with seven hits and six runs scored.

Koons is first in the Mountain West in batting average, hitting .538 so far this season. She is also first in the MW in on base percentage, .700. The Aggies have played the fewest games than anyone else in the conference. Sophomore pitcher Noelle Johnson is second in the league in strikeouts with 40 behind San Diego State's Danielle O'Toole with 60, while she is tied for second with 12 strike outs looking. Johnson is eighth in innings pitched with 29.1. Johnson is also fifth in earned run average with a 2.39 ERA.

Following the five games at the San Diego Classic I, the Aggies will player another tournament in the Golden State, playing at the Highlander Classic hosted by UC Riverside, March 7-9.
