QUICKLY - Utah State softball (5-6, 0-0 WAC) will leave behind the cold and snow in Utah in exchange for sunny San Diego, Calif. USU will play in five games in the San Diego Classic I, Friday - Sunday, March 2-4.
The Aggies open action against San Diego on Friday, March 2 at 5:15 p.m. (MT) and will follow up with another game that night against Long Beach State at 7:45. Utah State will resume action in the San Diego Classic with two games on Saturday, March 3 against Cal Poly at 2:30 p.m. and will finished the day with it's second meeting of the season against Cal State Northridge. USU defeated CSUN on Feb. 17, 12-9, in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic. USU will conclude play in the San Diego Classic, Sunday with a match-up against Saint Joseph's, first pitch is set for 10 a.m.
OLD RIVALRIES RENEWED - The Aggies will play against three teams from Big West Conference in the San Diego Classic I, playing games against Long Beach State, Cal Poly and Cal State Northridge. Utah State left the Big West Conference in 2002 for the Western Athletic Conference.
FANTASTIC FRESHMEN - USU has received an unexpected offensive spark from outfielder Hailey Froton, utility player Jolene Koons and infielder Taylor Serda, all three are freshmen. The three have combined for 18 hits, six doubles, five RBI and have scored 14 runs. Froton is currently ranked second in the WAC for doubles per game with a 0.44 average.
NEW FACE, BIG IMPACT - Colorado State transfer, junior infielder Christine Thomsen continues to contribute in her first season with the Aggies. Thomsen is second on the team with a .387 batting average and leads the team with 12 hits this season. Thomsen has knocked six RBI, three doubles and has a team high 18 total bases. Thomsen is also tied for most multiply hit games this season with four. Thomsen currently ranks tenth in the WAC with a 1.09 hits per game average.
HOT START - Senior infielder Kelley Kaneshrio has started to 2012 season hot at the plate. Kanershiro has 10 hits in 17 at-bats, which gives her a team leading .588 batting average. Kaneshiro has also posted a team-high .765 slugging percentage, as well as leading the team with a .708 on base percentage. Kaneshiro is also tied for first on the team with six RBI and is currently on a seven game hitting streak.
LAS VEGAS LAUNCH PAD - Utah State had not hit a home run before heading to Las Vegas for Louisville Slugger Desert Classic, where the USU bats came alive by hitting three home runs while in Sin City. Kelley Kaneshiro, Christine Thomsen and sophomore outfielder Kassandra Uchida all hit a long ball. Senior infielder Lindsey Marquez also hit a home run against Southern Utah on Feb. 20, giving the Aggies four home runs in four days.

START OF SEASON 37 - The 2012 season marks the 37th year of softball at Utah State... The Aggies enter the season with a 817-948-3 (.462) overall record... USU has one college World Series appearance (1984, tied for 7th) and four NCAA Tournament appearances (1984, 1989, 1992, 1993)... Utah State won the 1980 and 1981 AIAW National Championships... This is USU's seventh year in the WAC.
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING - Senior Dani Chaplin started her first game of the season against St. John's on Saturday, Feb. 11. Chaplin pitched four solid innings, allowing only three hits and mustered six strikeouts. Chaplin was credited for the win, which is her first win in a Utah State uniform.
THE LONG ROAD HOME - The Aggies home opener on March 30, will be the earliest it has been since 2009, when they hosted Boise State on March 20 in a three-game weekend showdown.
The Aggies have the latest home-opener in the WAC. USU also has the latest home-opener in the state of Utah, later than Weber State (March 13 vs. Dixie State), Utah (March 7 vs. BYU), BYU (March 20 vs. Idaho State), Utah Valley (March 28 vs. UMKC), Southern Utah (Feb. 20 vs. Utah State) and Dixie State (Feb. 9 vs. Cal St. San Bernardino).
The Aggies will not see the friendly confines of LaRee and LeGrand Johnson Field until March 30, when they host WAC opponent Nevada in a three-game weekend series.
AGGIES IN THE WAC - Utah State ranks fifth in the WAC in team batting average .263, falling just behind San Jose State posted a .264. USU has three players in the top twenty for individual batting average, Christine Thomsen is currently 12th with a .387 average, Hailey Froton is 17th with a .360 and Lindsey Marquez sits at 19th with a .348.
Marquez and Thomsen are also in the top 10 in the WAC for on-base percentage, Marquez ranks sixth with a .545 on-base average and Thomsen is tied for ninth with a .500. The Aggies as a team rank fourth in on-base percentage with a .372 mark.
Utah State is averaging 1.55 doubles per game, which is the second highest mark in the WAC.
USU is currently fourth in the WAC for strikeouts per game with a 4.73 average. Junior pitchers Mandy Harmon and Shelbi Tyteca are in the WAC top 10 for appearances, Harmon ranks tenth with eight appearances and Tyteca is tied with four other players for sixth with nine appearances.
Harmon and Tyteca also rank in the WAC top 10 for strikeouts per game, Harmon is averaging 6.28 strikeouts per game which is the sixth best mark in the WAC. Tyteca is averaging 5.13 strikeouts per game landing her the eighth best mark in the conference.
TIDBITS ABOUT UTAH STATE -
- Utah State is returning six starters from last year's squad and the heart of USU's batting line-up with Lenzora, Uchida and Kaneshiro. Kaneshiro is the all-time leading home run hitter in Aggie history.
- Utah State's infield will be anchored with the experience of two seniors, one junior and a sophomore.
- USU added eight freshmen for this year's campaign, who bring depth and athleticism to the squad. Five of the eight newcomers hail from California, bringing the total to 11 players from the Golden State.
- The Aggies return three experienced and veteran pitchers for the 2012 season with juniors Mandy Harmon and Shelbi Tyteca, as well as senior Dani Chaplin.
SERIES HISTORY VS OPPONENTS -
San Diego - This will be the third meeting between Utah State and San Diego. San Diego leads the series 2-0, both games were played in 2006.
Long Beach State - Friday's game will be the 63rd meeting between USU and Long Beach State, LBSU leads the series 41-20 with one tie. The 49ers defeated the Aggies last season, 2-0, on March 13.
Cal Poly - This will be the 37th meeting with the old Big West foe, Utah State trails in the all-time series, 15-21. Cal Poly defeated USU 5-2 last season in Las Vegas, on Feb, 19.
Cal State Northridge - This is the 49th meeting between Utah State and Cal State Northridge and the second of the season. USU is 20-28 against the former Big West foe and defeated the Matadors earlier this season, 12-9, in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.
Saint Joseph's - Sunday's game will be the first match-up of these two teams. This will be the Aggies first game against an Atlantic-10 team this season.
- Carissa Millsap Kalaba hired two new assistant coaches this off season, Jessica Pistole and Holly Pearce.
Jessica Pistole joins Utah State as an assistant coach by way of William Jessup University, where she was the head softball coach for two seasons for the Warriors. Pistole was awarded the California Pacific Conference Coach of the Year in 2011.
Holly Pearce joins the Utah State softball coaching staff in as an assistant coach for the 2012 season. Prior to becoming a part of the Aggies' coaching staff, Pearce last coached at Los Alamitos High School in southern California, from 2009 to 2011.
- Carissa Millsap-Kalaba (Cal-uh-ba) comes to Utah State after five seasons as the head coach at Biola University in La Mirada, Calif... While at Biola, Millsap-Kalaba led the Eagles to five-straight playoff appearances, the longest streak in the program's 17-year history... Her teams also finished no lower than fifth in the tough Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC), posting an overall mark of 59-61... During her tenure at Biola, she compiled an overall record of 143-93 (.606 winning percentage), averaging just under 29 wins per year.
- Carissa Millsap-Kalaba enters her third season at Utah State after a successful first season.
- During her third season Millsap-Kalaba guided USU to its best WAC finish since joining the conference in 2006, with an 8-13 record good for fifth in the conference.
- Under Millsap-Kalaba, 10 players earned academic all-WAC honors in 2011.
- After transferring from Hofstra University, Kalaba played two seasons at UCLA where the Bruins won the Women's College World Series title in 1999.
- During her tenure at Biola, she compiled an overall record of 143-93 (.606 winning percentage), averaging just under 29 wins per year.
UP NEXT - Utah State will travel to Long Beach to play in the Long Beach State Invitational. Following the Long Beach Invitational, USU will play a double header against Harvard and Loyola Marymount.
