Aggie Softball Returns to Action Against Weber State Tuesday

LOGAN, Utah - After a weekend off from Mountain West action, Utah State softball (15-21, 4-5 MW), returns to action this week with a busy five-game schedule. The Aggies begin the week with a non-conference doubleheader with in-state rival Weber State on Tuesday, April 15, beginning at 2 p.m., at LaRee and LeGrand Johnson Field in Logan.
USU will then make the trip to the Golden State for a three-game series with second-place San Diego State in San Diego. This series begins on Thursday due to the Easter holiday. The series will begin on Thursday, April 17 at 7 p.m. (MT). The Aztecs are tied for second with San José State with matching 6-3 league records. This is the second of four Mountain West road series for the Aggies this season.
Utah State is currently 5-2 this season against the Beehive State. This will be the first meeting the Aggies and the Wildcats this season. Utah State is 1-0 against Utah this season with an 8-5 victory in Salt Lake City on March 3. The Aggies are 0-1 against BYU with an eight-inning 5-4 loss in Provo on April 2. USU is a perfect 3-0 against Utah Valley with a doubleheader sweep in Orem on March 18 (4-1, 8-7) and a 10-9 win on April 2 in Provo. Utah State is also 1-1 against Southern Utah with season opening 8-0 win on Feb. 6, followed by a 4-1 loss to the Thunderbirds on March 25 in Provo.
Weber State and Utah State have not met yet this season. The Wildcats (19-19, 2-7 Big Sky) are 11-31 overall against the Aggies. Weber State has dropped its last four games, including two against Utah and two against Idaho State. The Thunderbirds have Big Sky Conference wins against Southern Utah and Idaho State. Weber State is 5-4 against the Beehive State this season, including wins against BYU, Southern Utah and Utah Valley.
The Wildcats are led by Jasmine Ioane who is hitting .340 this season with 36 hits and eight home runs this season. Brooke Silva is hitting .331 this season and is leading the team with hits with 42 and has scored 20 runs so far this season. In the circle, MaCauley Flint leads the way with a 9-6 record with a 2.37 ERA. She has pitched 115.1 innings pitched with 130 strikeouts.
This season, Utah State has seen a resurgence in its power numbers. Last season, the Aggies hit only eight home runs and had eight triples. This season, USU already has 26 home runs and has hit nine triples. In 2013, junior Hailey Froton did not hit any home runs, but in 2014 she leads the team with seven home runs.
