LOGAN, Utah -
Utah State softball (32-16, 14-9 MW) continues its season this week in the first round of the National Invitational Softball Championship, hosted by Weber State. The Aggies, who are playing in the postseason for the first time since 1993, will begin the regional round of the tournament against San Diego (22-22) on Tuesday, May 16, at 1 p.m. The double-elimination tournament will continue on Wednesday, May 17, with games at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., as needed.
The first round of games will be streamed live by Weber State through BigSkyTV. Live stats and play-by-play information will be available, while updates will also be provided through the team’s social media outlets. Links to each option will be available online prior to the game.
All of this week’s regional games will be played at Wildcat Softball Field on the campus of Weber State in Ogden, Utah. Tickets are $35 for a full regional pass, or $15 per day for adults, $8 per day for seniors, or $5 for youth and students. Children four years of age and younger are free. Tickets can be at purchased in person at the Dee Events Center box office, by calling (801) 626-8500 or online through the Weber State ticket office.
San Diego wrapped up the regular season with a 22-22 overall record, while going 8-7 in league play to finish third in the West Coast Conference. The Toreros closed their conference season going 2-1 at Loyola Marymount (L 4-3, W 4-1, W 1-0).
San Diego returns six starters and 14 total letterwinners from last year’s roster, a team that went 22-29 on the year with an 8-7 WCC record. Sophomore outfielder Taylor Specne leads both San Diego and the WCC at the plate, as she is batting .415 (59-of-142) on the season. Senior Megan Sabbatini has pitched the majority of innings for the Toreros, where she has a 4.04 ERA and a 12-13 individual record. In all, USD has allowed 385 hits and 217 runs on the year, while striking out 188 batters and walking 101. As a team, San Diego is batting .282 (331-of-1174), scoring 169 runs with 155 RBIs. Melissa McElvain is in her 16th season as the head coach of the Toreros, where she has an overall record of 336-447.
Utah State and San Diego have met on the field just six times in the past, starting in 2006. The Toreros have won all six contests, with the most recent coming at the Amy S. Harrison classic in 2015. For Utah State, senior second baseman Victoria Saucedo lead the offense, as she is batting .381 on the season with a team-high 59 hits. Senior first baseman Paxton Provost is tops defensively, tallying 300 p utouts on the year. Freshman Kellie White leads the Aggie pitching staff with a 17-6 record and a 2.58 ERA. In all, the USU pitchers have allowed 299 hits and 173 total runs while striking out 187 batters and walking 148. As a team, the Aggies are batting .312 with 414 hits and 255 runs scored.
