Nov. 26, 2008
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State softball head coach Candi Letts has announced that four players have signed to compete for the Aggies in the 2009-10 season. Joining USU next fall will be freshmen Katelyn Elliott, Tina Ferguson, Mandy Harmon and Shelbi Tyteca. Complete Release in PDF Format
"I am very excited to announce the 2009 recruiting class, three of the four players are from Utah, and they want to make their mark for the Aggies," Letts said. "These four young ladies bring a tremendous amount of ability and have such positive attitudes that programs can build on. There is no doubt that they will make our program better." Elliott, Ferguson and Tyteca all played for the same 18-under club team, Pegasus. The trio were all crucial in helping the team win the ASA Western National Championship in Seattle in August. Both Katelyn Elliott and Tina Ferguson attend Spanish Fork High School. Katelyn Elliott is an infielder/utility player from Spanish Fork, Utah (Spanish Fork HS). In high school last year, she earned first-team all-state honors. On her club team Pegasus, Elliott hit .345 with 50 hits and 12 home runs last summer. She also had a solid slugging percentage of .613 to go along with nine double and 23 walks.
"Katelyn is an outstanding softball athlete. We are extremely happy to have landed her," Letts said. "She will bring a ton of athleticism to our team; she can play anywhere on the field at a high level. I can't wait for her to be in a Aggie uniform because she will make good things happen." Tina Ferguson is also an infielder/utility player from Payson, Utah and attends the same Spanish Fork High School as Katelyn Elliott. Ferguson is a very versatile player who can play several positions. Last season at Spanish Fork, she was also named first-team all-state, hitting .525. With the Pegasus team last summer, Ferguson hit. 305 with 35 hits and 17 doubles. "Tina is one of the most versatile athletes to come out of Utah," Letts said "You can put her in anywhere, and she will find a way to get the job done. Tina is a player who has a nose for the ball both at the plate or in the field. She will make an immediate impact in our program."
Mandy Harmon is a pitcher from Las Vegas, Nev. (Shadow Ridge HS). Harmon was a two-time first-team all-state as a pitcher in 2007 and 2008. She was also named the Northwest Division Pitcher of the Year in both those seasons. In 2007 and 2008, her squad was Sunset Region Champions. Harmon was a three-time letter winner at Shadow Ridge in softball. Las Vegas Magazine named her "Athlete of the Month" in May 2008. Harmon attends the same high school as current Aggie freshmen infielders Rayna Bradshaw and Jasmine Harris. All three played for the Las Vegas Gold Rage club team. "Mandy is a very talented pitcher that we were excited to land," Letts said. "She has all the tools to be a very good Division I pitcher as well as helping us get in the top half of the WAC. Mandy also has a good bat which makes her versatile. She will immediately help us with depth to our pitching staff. We look forward to all the ability Mandy has to offer."
Shelbi Tyteca is pitcher from Farmington, Utah (Viewmont HS). She was named second-team all-state as a pitcher last season. Along with pitching for the Pegasus squad, Tyteca also hit .362 with 50 hits and five home runs. Shelbi's sister Shasta is a sophomore catcher for the Aggies this season. "Shelbi is a very strong pitcher that we are extremely happy to have committed to us," Letts said. "Shelbi is a tremendous hitter as well, and she is a very competitive player who is going to be a definite impact in our program."
